I personally see nothing wrong with bf until the child self weans. But if the child DID tell her that he wanted to stop and she refused to, then it is wrong. That is just my opinion-

The View's hot topic today When to Wean?

Check out today's hot topic on The View,

When to Wean?: A six-year-old Illinois boy was removed from his mother's custody because she was still breast-feeding him against his wishes when he was five. The mother denies the allegations and the case is being heard in court today. Should the child have been taken from his mother?

Thats what I said--IF he DID tell her. your right you probably can't force a child to bf, especially at that age!

I know I tried to get Blake to switch from bottle to bf at 2weeks, he absolutely refused, to the point that if he even saw me take off my shirt he would scream! I think he developed 'boob fobia' for a while! LOL!!

I know, we recently had a case here where they took a baby because the mother was HIV + and she refused to stop bf. They had doctors that said it is possible for the baby to get it from the BM but the overall conclusion was that no one knows for sure. I don't think I could knowingly do something the could even 'possibly' hurt my child. I think in that case the risk definatly out weighted the benefits.

Re: The View's hot topic today When to Wean?

Someone on the boards at ABC said that it is possible if the babysitter made a comment about him bfing being gross, he may have said "well I don't really want to do it" so she wouldn't think HE was gross YKWIM? Knowing 5 year old boys (and I had one) it is a possible scenario. The problem is, CPS didn't consider it, they took him away because they though it was impossible for the mother to still be lactating, like they would know?

Michele,

I read this and it really saddens me. Of course I don't know the specific family but it sure seems to be a huge judgement on the part of the child protective services.

Especially to take the word of a 15 y/o babysitter over the mother. BTW, on the show, Jay the comedian said that he was bf until he was 3-4 years old and thought it was normal :-)

The question is though, what, if anything, did the child tell his mother? He was taken away based on a 15 y/o babysitter's report of a conversation she had with the boy, even though the mother claims differently. I don't think you can force a child to breastfeed, JMHO

Yes, I would think so. I think in that situation I'd look at donated bm as the first alternative :-)

,

I hate to be the voice of dissent but......there is a chance that breastfeeding could be the difference in immune function for a baby with HIV and many babies who contract HIV in utero don't test postive for several months. These babies would be deprived of mother's milk that could make the difference. Also giving formula with it's multitude of risks can harm a baby. It just isn't as cut and dried as we would all like it to be.

Michele,

It really is hard to say. There is a study that shows that exclusive breastfeeding by an HIV positive mother actually had a comparable risk of infection as formula fed babies. Exclusive breastfeeding seemed to be the real key there. I wish more funding would go toward studying HIV and breastfeeding because many women and babies are denied this experience (in America) and we don't even know for sure how it works.
