Those were my initial instructions, and I don't think I had any problems that way. I changed it to 3 times a day after my gallbladder was removed. That appeals to the engineer in me, since your body needs bile acids (Urso is one of them - ursodeoxycholic acid, mostly) to process fats. The gallbladder stores up bile and releases it after meals - obviously that doesn't happen if there's no gallbladder. Seems to work just fine, and my next prescription came out that way.

I still have to pay if I have that Culver's shake, though. :0)

Hey all, just wondering - how do you take URSO? My instructions are to

take 4 pills all at once after dinner.... is that what you all do, or

do you divide it up throughout the day?

My husband takes (4) 300mg capsules of Urso in the morning and another (4) 300 mg capsules at night (total of 2400 mg a day). Is more necessarily better? Liver doc at University of Washington doubled his dose a year ago. Tom has had an increase in fatigue this week as well as his urine changing color. Urine test showed high level of sugars. Waiting for results. Similar for anyone else? Wife of Tom, dx 1994 PSC

I take 500mg in the morning and 1000 at night. Originally the rx was written to take it in equal doses throughout the day but since I don't take meds at lunchtime I sometimes forgot it. My hep is ok with the way I take it now. I'm just taking 1 of 250mg tablets twice a day about 12 hours apart. The instruction were to take it with food, but they don't upset my stomach so I don't bother with the food. I had an operation to remove some of my bile ducts in 1989 but did not start taking URSO until 1999. Attached graphs show that my enzyme numbers have been much better since I did start taking URSO.

My URSO instructions changed as I've changed healthcare providers. From 1999 to 2005, I took 300 mg in the morning and 300 mg in the evening. I'm now in the high-URSO study, taking 600 mg three times a day (morning, afternoon, evening), based upon weight (I weigh about 150 lbs). A few years ago, I learned during an emergency blood transfusion (super low crit) that my health care team considers URSO to be the most important of all the drugs I take (I have 9 different prescriptions). They told me when the transfusion process was taking longer than originally expected, that I could skip all other meds for the evening, but I needed to maintain the URSO level in my body. An additional note: thanks to the conference "Women with PSC" support group, I was successful in persuading my hepatologist to perform an MRCP despite the fact that my labs don't indicate there's a need. First,

I retrieved the records from a 2-year old MRCP and then I convinced him that a comparison of that with a current one would have value. Still awaiting results. Debbie in Seattle UC 1972, J Pouch 1991, PSC confirmed 2005

I find it doesn't sit well if I take more than 750 mg at once. I take

a calcium supplement with it and that helps with prevent an upset

stomach.

Re: above

I also take calcium but that's because they discovered I have

osteoporosis as well. Since I started seeing yet another specialist to

deal with that, I'm taking Actonel (Risedronate Sodium) once a week

but the calcium daily with vitamin D analog (i.e., prescription

version). The latter apparently helps with calcium absorption better

than the vitamin D you'd get with your other vitamins. However, they

do say on the calcium bottle that it shouldn't be taken with other

meds (apart from vitamin D I guess) so I take those two late at night.

I take my URSO (1 g) twice daily with meals (easier to remember to

take it) along with Salofalk (1 g) twice daily for my UC.
