I am always amazed when I read my little hometown paper and read of all of the arrests and busts the local police, state police, etc. are making in the area where I grew up naive and innocent except for the dangers of that demon alcohol!!! By the time I went off to the university after 2 years at a junior college, I became exposed to the main drug of choice --- marijuana. And I am now thinking about the fact that I had my first drink of an alcholic mixed drink about a month before my 21st birthday! Somehow I managed to get through a number of years of never touching any of the marijuana, and other things even stronger --- didn't even get the contact high two of my roommates had had bet on how long it would take them get me hooked!! My sister had a a favorite phrase about using drugs -- " My head is messed up enough without adding something else to it! " And if anyone could have been tempted more than my sister with the friends she had, I will tip my hat to them. I remember one time walking into a party some of them were having and the ones who did not know who I was were just sure I was a " narc! " But I was really shocked a few years ago when I was either having some bad skin reactions or a sinus problem and I stopped at a gas station with a mini mart and could not find any Benadryl on any of the shelves. I guess I should have realized, after reading that little paper online of the problem, but I did NOT know that, at least in that part of Illinois, anything with whatever substance they need to make meth is in Benadryl and other such medicines. I asked the clerk, he said it was locked behind the counter and that he would have to see my driver's license to make certain I am over 21 ---- strange to be asked that --- I know with my white hair and a few other things it is pretty obvious I am well over that age. And now I think it must be a federal law! But the other part of the problem is that one way the ones who cooks the stuff get as much as they need is by going from store to store!!!! And I don't know if there is a system in place so that the an individual's name gets put into some kind of computer system that indicates an individual has purchased the max for any one day. I just know it is a very big problem in the area where I grew up. On, the other hand, maybe it shouldn't surprise me as much because during prohibition, there were gang wars between all of the bootleggers all over the area from East St. Louis across the state and to the very tip. And supposedly one of my great uncles was killed by one of the gangs because he had his own still!
