Guest guest
Pink It's amazing the good that some publicity can do a cause but then how that cause can become one that gets what would appear more than its share of funding compared to others. I remember many criticisms of the MDA telethons as they got all the tv time and raised so many dollars. I'm not bothered too much by it except when you're made to feel bad because you don't contribute. I use to choose Battered Womens Shelters as my charity of choice as I felt they needed it and were underfunded and underpublicized. It's not that I didn't care about the more popular charities or causes. I simply didn't have enough for everything and made a personal choice. I choose to decide personally and contribute privately. I can say no to others but do sometimes get tired of having to do so in the grocery line and at places where I am choosing to do business. Are you a bad person when you choose not to give to Salvation Army as you walk in a business but gave privately to a local homeless shelter or when you say no to a school fundraiser to send the Glee Club to Spain but prefer to buy angels on the tree in the mall or when you don't buy girl scout cookies? While I also want funds for PF and research and education and help for those needing support, I try hard not to present it as the only worthy cause. There may be many causes that hit others closer at home. I make people aware and I'll direct them where to contribute if they show a desire. I do judge charities on their use of funds and I do have a problem with the amount some spend on lobbying or on fund raising. I like PFF because I see their efficient use of funds. If they used their funds in the same manner the American Lung Association does I would not contribute, even though they represent my disease. It's great when celebrities lend their names and help to charities and encourage giving but there are far more worthy causes than any of us can help and I do try to be aware where my meager amounts of money are going. I do also think all charities should have to make their use of funds more clear in easy to understand language to every contributor. Were it not for the IRS and its regulation of non-profit status we'd have little control. As it is, there is still huge abuse. What about the Police Funds established by fundraisers all around the country and telemarketing you where anything from zero to a maximum of 10% actually goes to the Police charity program and 90% to the fundraisers? Ok, off my soap box that Pink is responsible for me getting on. Decide carefully and with research where to give. Educate on PF and other less known diseases and encourage aid but don't think its the only worthy cause or even most worthy. Its just the most personal to us. > > > > > > Hi > See the attached: > http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/27283197/ > > > I hope you are able to get the article > you might have to cut and past > > it's about breast cancer awareness and all of the fundraising going there > > > > Pink Joyce IPF 3/06 Pennsylvania >
