Guest guest
If you're up for it, I have more questions.....(if it's too much, please just say so, don't want you to see my name and go Oh No Not Her Again!) From right after you were released from the hospital into the apartment, until now - how many times did/do you have to go in for labs? Are you having to drive the 3 hours into Vandy, or can you do labs locally? Did you have back pain before tx? If so has it gone away? Ken is really having back problems. Thanks athan, Barb in Texas

Guest guest
athan, Just to give you a Vandy perspective. I talked to one of the transplant nurses at Vandy when wanted to go back to work. She said his only restriction was to avoid jobs where he would be in moist dirty places. In other words, not to work under houses or in sewers. I agree with the others, that gloves would probably be a good idea, but other than that, have fun in your garden. You are doing so well. I keep telling all the things you are doing and he is jealous. He still gets tired easy, and today he is having some lower back pain. I think it has something to do with his j pouch. He may be having some pouchitis. He swears he doesn't think that is the problem. He has had back problems for years, and nothing shows up on MRI. It's hard to say what it could be, but it slows him down. I'll look up the labs on the Vandy website... I was released on 4/29 and I had labs run that day before I left the hospital then I had labs on the following days: 4/30 5/2 5/4 5/7 5/11 5/18 5/30 I'll have them run again this next Wednesday (June 6) when I go in for my appointment. > Are you having to drive the 3 hours into Vandy, or can you do labs > locally? > I have to drive to Vandy for my checkups, but I get my labs done very locally. My wife draws my blood at home and takes it with her when she goes to work... she works in the lab at Baptist Hospital here in town. It's really pretty nice. I can just have her draw the blood right before I take my morning meds, and then she faxes me the results as soon as they're done. I usually have my results before the doctors do! The only one her hospital can't do is the prograf level, but they can send it either to Vandy or to another hospital here in town. > Did you have back pain before tx? Yes > If so has it gone away? Not really, but actually it may have... I still have back pain but it's a little different from the back pain I was having before. The nurse at Vandy said that a lot of people have trouble with back pain from the transplant surgery, so it's possible that it will go away once I finish healing up. I'll keep you updated! athan

Guest guest
athan, you are a mine of useful information, thank you. I know that the system in Australia may be very different to the USA, but to me, venturing into a transplant is such a scary experience, any information is treated like a gold nugget! Thank you, and thank you Barb for asking things I never thought of. The blood test question is great, we are about an hour away from the hospital and is suggesting moving closer for a period of a few weeks/months when the time comes. Two hours travel just for bloods would be a nightmare. Penny T
