Guest guest
Unfortunately APD only accepts autistic disorder and then evaluates to see if he qualifies. Even if your child was reevaluated and diagnosed with autistic disorder, he would still need to meet APD's diagnostic criteria. My son got on the waiver through the crisis tool. I regret it as he needs mental health services as well and since he qualifies for the medicaid waiver, he does not qualify for SIPP. The ONLY residential APD will provide is a group home or Carlton Palms. What kind of residential treatment are you looking for? I applied for MedWaiver " In Crisis " for my son who was referred to residential treatment by his psychiatrist and psychologist after 2 Baker Acts last year and numerous other severe behavior incidents. We have CMS but they don't cover the treatments he needs. Fast forward, the APD referred my son for an evaluation with one of their psychologists who would re-evaluate him for an autism diagnosis to qualify. My son has a diagnosis of PDD NOS with autistic tendencies, LLD and sensory. But apparently the APD ONLY accepts the word " AUTISM " . So I'm thinking it's all good until I get a letter from the APD on Friday that he has been denied. Period. No re-evaluation. Nothing but the Appeals Process, which I can't see as a positive thing. So now what? Can I get a private psychologist re-evaluate him to fit the APD's criteria...how does this work and has anyone done this? My son was diagnosed 7 years ago, before Autism Spectrum Disorder was in play. Isn't PDD NOS considered ASD? What is going on here and what do I do now? Guest guest
APD will only accpet a diagnosis of "autism" as the statutes (chapter 393) only reference five specific diagnosis: cerebal palsy, mental retardation, spina bifida, prader willi and autism. They interpet that very literally and although on the autism spectrum PDD NOS or even aspergers will not qualify you for services. File the appeal and get one or even two more autism specific diagnosis. As long as your child is not yet 18 and you get autism as the diagnosis, you will qualify To: sList Sent: Sun, January 30, 2011 5:48:50 PMSubject: Please Help with MedWaiver in Crisis & PDD NOS I applied for MedWaiver "In Crisis" for my son who was referred to residential treatment by his psychiatrist and psychologist after 2 Baker Acts last year and numerous other severe behavior incidents. Guest guest
Hi, sorry to har about this. According to the DSM (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders), PDD NOS means that "this category inludes "atypical autism"-presentations that do not meet the criteria for Autistic Disorder because of late age of onset, atypical symptomatology, or subthreshold symptomalogy, or all of these". "Autistic tendencies", like you say, may not meet the criteria needed to qualify for the "Crisis Medwaiver" then. Somebody needs to diagnose him with autism. Who gave him the previous diagnosis of "sensory"? What criteria were used and what source were they based on? Where in the DSM do you find Sensory? The DSM sets the formal criteria for all mental disorders. Guest guest
The Dan Marino Center will write the general autism diagnosis for your son. After you get this diagnosis, take it back to medwaiver. You can also appeal this crisis. They will consider new information and try to bring an attorney. DEfinitely ask for the appeal.
