Guest guest
I'm sorry to say that I think this recent bit of controversy may have gotten started when someone posted an entry from my blog last week. Unfortunately, what I said has been taken way out of context, and for that I apologize. I do realize that SSI is a bit of very badly needed help for many people; however, as Debra V said, there are those of us for whom not working is not an option. I am not married and am the sole breadwinner for my household. There is no way I could stop working in order to qualify to apply for SSI or SSA and then have to remain at no income for two years or more while I fought to get qualified. I would lose everything I've worked hard all my life to get, including my home, so it has just never been an option for me. It makes me mad overall and very disappointed in our government that people who are disabled have to go through such hell only to ultimately receive a pittance that is not even a subsistence level income if you do qualify and get your benefits. It should not be that hard. We should not have to strip ourselves completely of whatever material wealth we've worked hard for in order to starve on disability income. Disabled people in many other, less affluent contries than the U.S. are treated much better and receive realistic benefits from their governments without having to impoverish themselves in order to receive those benefits. So, please accept my apologies if what I wrote offended anyone. It certainly was not intended as a slight to anyone. Paine To contribute to my book, please contact me at fibrobook@...
