Guest guest
I just reponded to your other post regarding sonograms and assumed you weren't taking the P. Now I see you are.Welllllllllll - let me tell you, I wil N E V E R touch Prometrium again for as long as I live. After two months of trying that, compounded because of the dyes and preservatives I'm allergic to in the prescription Prometrium, I thought I'd die from it. (Okay - so I'm exaggerating a little - but not much!).In addition to vulvar pain, leg pain and peeing all the time ( don't have IC - but have menopausal weak bladder), and sleepiness - my tummy started growing! IN 12 days I ended up looking like a pregnant person. Much severe lower tummy pain and such nausea, I thought for sure something other than taking Prometrium was wrong with me. Severe, very severe hours long hot "flashes" were nearly unbearable and the nightmares were scary as hell. Headache/vision problems and then what seemed the most unbearable - complete and utter constipation.... nothing moved me. Now, I'm a regular gal - two times a day at least and often 3 so this was intolerably painful and no doubt the cause of my "pregnant" belly and gastric distress during the 12 days taking the med. FINALLY, I took the 12 pill... so relieved that I didn't have to do this again for a bit and breathed a sigh of relief. Things didn't start to get better until about 24 hours after the last pill when some of the symptoms were subsiding... Then B A M - I got hit (while at a party) with violent retching and vomiting and thing watery bowels which went on for 7 hours. As this was about 30 hours after the last pill, I was certain that this gastric explosion had to be due to the chicken wings at the party. It took another two days or so to feel like me - but I didn't get the period! Now I've been taking synthetic "Norenthindrone" since 2002 to get the bleed, so I was really worried when I got no bleed on the third day after stopping the meds.I called the compounding pharma. (Pete H. - Dee's guy at Bellevue) and he said it was probably due to the fact that the synthetics are so much stronger than the Prometrium and that I'd no doubt get a bleed the following month. He gave me some advice on using stool softeners to avoid the constipation and a few other pointers and I went on my merry way still thinking those chicken wings were murder!Well time came to take the next round of 12 and as predicted by Pete, a great many of the original symptoms were gone or were not as severe as the first go round. He advised that this would happen as the body adjust to the 'rthym' of the new med. So, I'm thinking by about month 4 or 5, I'll be doing okay with this stuff. Took the last pill of the second go round and lo and behold at about 30 hours after the last pill - AGAIN - violent retching, much more severe vomiting and water, violent bowels. This lasted about 12 hours this time. AND - no period.I called my GYN - my reaction was a serious case of excessive Prostaglandin Withdrawal/Release. The remedy for this is using Ibuprofen or Naproxen is some kind of sequence while taking the P, but I can't as I have a 30 year history of stomach ulcers.I am back on the synthetic this month and I'm praying that the Prometrium compound didn't start a reaction to all P's.Sucks is RIGHT!DustyChelle wrote: I've not had a period in 3.5 months, so I am using Prometrium to induce a bleed. Glad I'm on bio-identical...but still, I KNOW beyond a shadow of a doubt, Progesterone SUCKS for me. My pain is definitely tied in with hormones (and I also suspect pelvic floor dysfunction). The first night that I took P. I woke up about 3 to 4 times at night to pee (I have IC), but I hadn't done that in a good long time. Then the second night, the P. made me so drowsy I had to go to bed. Then, if all this isn't enough, I could feel vulvar irritation starting (when otherwise it has been doing pretty good). Estrogen is soooo good for my bladder & v. pain...they feel so much better when I'm only on it and not the P. If any of you suspect 'hormones' as a cause to your Vulvar pain, then I suggest you read Dr. Vliet's book, "Screaming to be Heard"....it's BIG and it's LONG, but it is the most informative info on hormones I've ever read. I've had to push for every hormone test I've had and every treatment (hormonally) I'm currently using...but the estrogen, by far, has helped me the most. It may not help everyone, but it may help some. Hugs, ~Chelle Looking for a deal? Find great prices on flights and hotels with Yahoo! FareChase. Guest guest
Interesting side not Chelle..... I do not have any of these side effects, except the crabbiness and mild breast tenderness with the synthentic Norenthindrone (which I had been using for 5 years before trying this compounded Prometrium). Yet, the first few months I used Norenthindrone, it too gave me frequent bathroom trips, fatigue, blues, nightmares etc.If you only take the Prometrium 8 days you may cause more harm than good to the endometrial lining as there is a prescribed number of days NEEDED in order to loosen the entire lining for sloughing. My doc started me on 14 days, then changed me to 12. Perhaps to counteract the IC symptoms you could increase your internal/topical estrace?I used the Prometrium for two months - 200 mg daily. Unless my doc took it to 100 mg (which I might be able to try), I will NEVER take that stuff again. That vomiting and diarrhea and nausea is for the birds.DustyChelle wrote: Zigmissus wrote: >>>>>>>>>According to Dr. Lee's book, women who areestrogen-dominant benefit from progesterone, but I'mnot and I don't. It's like a poison for me, too.Because I'm post-menopausal and on a low dose ofcontinuous estrogen, my gyno insist I take it for 10days every three months to induce a withdrawal bleed.I have to stay home the last five of those 10 days dueto constantly having to urinate and sufferinguncontrollable diarrhea. Oddly, my chronic insomniaseems to disappear while I'm taking progesterone, butit does me no good since I keep waking up to use thebathroom! Zig Hi Zig, progesterone is so rough on me. I'm trying my best to make it to the 10 day mark on the Prometrium, but I'm thinking of stopping at 8...I haven't had any diarrhea like you and Dusty mentioned, but I've had other 'not so hot' symptoms...especially my IC bladder! Progesterone is so hard on it. And my mood...on my goodness, it makes me 'crabby' and short. I warned my hubby before I started on it and apologized 'in advance' if I am mean! *sigh* Remember that 70's song by the Eagles.... "witchy woman"....that's me right now! LOL!!! I don't even remember what it was about, I just know the title fits. Hubby and I started laughing when I told him that after I stop the Prometrium we can go around singing, "Ding-Dong the witch is dead, the mean ol' witch, the wicked witch".... (wizard of oz).....LOL! Ooooo that's a good one, I'm cracking up right now...*Ha Ha* I'd say your insomnia is disappearing while on the P. due to it's drowsy effects. Even natural P. can make us feel tired. But that is such a bummer when you have to get up and down throughout the night and pee....thanks for the response... Hugs, Chelle Building a website is a piece of cake. Yahoo!
