Guest guest
Ok, when you said you'd been disabled for two years I assumed you meant social security had made a determination or been paying. Now that I know you mean a disability through Cal Teacher's program its much different and more complicated and you need to see a CalSTRS benefits counselor immediately. I don't know about eligibility for cobra extension if you've not been declared disabled by social security. Your eligibility for medicare upon retirement depends on your hire date and if before 1986 depends on what your district has done. While the state has no health insurance through the retirement program from what I gather, some school districts do and those may of may not apply when disabled. Now, it seems unfair that if you're covered by medicare on retirement you wouldn't be on disability but I'm aware of no such provision to cover you on disability if you've not been declared disabled through social security. I hate that teachers aren't subject to certain protections. Now, California does have a guaranteed insurance program for individuals no longer eligible for Cobra and unable to get individual coverage on their own. Unfortunately, for someone your age, the premiums are outrageous. Sorry, I am not of much help here but long term teachers fall into a very different group and vary by state and, it some cases, even by district. You need to talk to CalSTRS and others as soon as possible. Meanwhile if they are extending your Cobra that does give you some time. Did you have any social security time and eligibility? If so, did you qualify for social security disability even if minimal or reduced to zero by your teachers disability? > > > > > > > > I know you are having a good time together.
