As far as I know there is no other way of

removing the stent. Unfortunately, there are no bio-degradable stents for ERCP.

I never had pancreatitis after an ERCP and I don’t know whether your son

will get it or not next week. I wish I had a crystal ball though. ;-)

Cirrhosis (liver damage) can be diagnosed

through the blood work. If I remember well high levels of ALT and AST show

liver damage. Liver biopsy is not very accurate for cirrhosis either, since it

depends on where the cirrhosis is and where the doctors choose to perform the biopsy.

Of all the tests I had for PSC (Colonoscopy, ERCP, Ultrasound, Bone density,

blood tests, Endoscopy, CT, X-rays, even gall bladder removal) liver biopsy was

by far the most unpleasant. If I had to choose between gall bladder removal and

liver biopsy I would have a gall bladder removal again. The biopsy also didn’t

help diagnose the PSC since it came back normal. I don’t want to scare

you away from biopsy, but this is my experience with it.

Hope it helps,

Chaim, Israel

My son had a 1/2 dozen ERCPs over the years. There is no way to take out the stent without going in again. too got pancreatitis after 1 of his ERCPs but not with any of the other's. What are the Drs saying about when they want to do a biospy? 's dr used his for diagnosis of the PSC than never got another. Has your Dr done MRCPs on your son? Obviously you can't do that if you need a stent but they are good for pictures. Martikarrielm56 wrote: My son,

17, with UC/PSC had his first ERCP last Wednesday followed by acute pancreatitis and is still hospitalised - hopefully home today. The stent that was left in his centrsl bile duct has to be removed on Feb 14th. I realise none of you have a crystal ball but what are the chances he will get pancreatitis again next week after they remove the stent. Is there another way of removing this thing?Dan's PSC has been silent for 4 years (been busy coping with the UC up til now) until now so this is all new ground for us.Apparent The docs say he has not cirrhosis - but how do they know without a liver biopsy? Are the blood tests good enough? I dont want to put Dan through a liver biopsy right now but I do want the docs to be sure. Many thanks for your help
