Guest guest
When people talk about asymmetry they are usually referring to the difference between the two diagonals of the head measuring from Right-Front to Left-Back and Left-Front to Right Back. Your son’s head looks flat across the back of the head which is referred to as Brachycephaly. Brachycephaly severity is measured by the Cephalic Ratio = Cranial Breadth/Cranial Length ideal ratio - 78% normal - 73-83% moderate - 83.1% to 87.9% severe - 88% and higher You can visit both a STARband facility or a Cranial Tech facility for an evaluation. I think that some STARband places charge for the evaluation and I’m not sure about Cranial Tech. Here are their websites so you can see if there is a facility near you: Cranial Technologies: http://www.cranialtech.com/ClinicLocations/index.html STARband/Orhtomerica: http://www.orthomerica.com/technology/scan_locations.htm I looked at your son’s picture and there is some flatness across the back. However, I think it looks to be more on the mild side. My son’s teacher had a baby and his head looked much worse and the doctor did not recommend banding (it was the same dr. we saw so we know that he is band-friendly). When people talk about asymmetry, are they talking about the whole head or just asymmetry of facial features? (thanks, I am new). Also, can you go to a banding facility for an evaluation without your doctors direct recomendation? So far they have been very laid back about his head, we have an appointment this Thursday and I am not sure what to say if they try to assure me his head is fine. If you want to voice your opinion, I have put up 3 photos of him under Plagio T's - but it might be under new photos too. His name is Tristan. I started taking photos last week but should have done it a lot sooner. I stopped listening to all the " it is fine " talk but have aggresivly repositioned him sine his 4 month. Thank you very much if you have any other suggestions of opinions on my sons head. I just might be too sensitive about it. I don't know? Thank you! le > > > > Will repositional therapy work after 5 months of age for not a > severe > > case? > > > > Some of what I read says it is not effective - but many times they > > mention that is because it is harder to control how the baby sleeps > on > > his head. Guest guest
I agree with Molly. I'm no expert on brachy, but your son's head does seem to be on the mild side. I would almost say that he looks better (if not the same) than a sibling I know at school who has brachy and already graduated from her STARBand a few months back (she's 14 months old now). Of course, you have to do what makes you feel comfortable, so if it's really bothering you, definitely get an evaluation. Cranial Tech does do free evals, and they take photos and measurements and do a really nice job of giving you all the information you need to make an informed decision. I also had an eval at a StarBand orthotic and it was free (but I already had the prescription, so that might have been a factor). They took measurements and photos as well but in the end, we went with Cranial Tech. This is just my opinion, but I think that your son's head is mild enough that you could try repo for another month or two and see what happens. Take pictures weekly and compare. Once he starts sitting up and rolling over more, you will see more natural correction as well. But again, mom's know best, so you'll know the right path for you and your child. Either way, we'll be here to support you! Good luck!
