My daughter got her band at 5 mo old, and lost nearly all her hair

where the band covered her head. It stayed on the top where the band

was open, and on the back where the band didn't touch her head. It

started growing back after about 1 mo. Our ortho told us about 10% of

kids lose their hair. I don't know if that percentage is correct, but

most babies don't lose their hair.

Every night when I take my son's helmet off, there are a few strands

of hair in it, strangely enough in the section where his flat spot is

and there is more room in the band (as opposed to where it holds right

against his head). But he hasn't lost any significant amounts and it's

been 6 weeks. His hair is long and curly and I pull as much out of the

top as I can, so that it's not all flattened down (he has a DocBand

though which is more open on top, not sure I could do it with a

StarBand). I have started to notice that his hair is changing as far

as the curl and growth pattern. But I'm not going to worry about it

just yet. I figure once he's done with the band, I can get it cut kind

of short and start fresh. Though I know if I had a girl in a band, I

would be more distressed with the idea of cutting her hair! (my

daughter's hair took FOREVER to come in, and still grows so slowly, so

I'm glad I'm going through this with a boy!)

You're not crazy. My daughter was born with a ton of hair and it's

broken off on her forhead and all around the back and sides are bald

from rubbing in the helmet. I find all kinds of hair in the helmet

when I take it off to give her a bath at night. It's so sad, I love

her hair.
