Guest guest
Hey everyone - quick question. We met with the cranial surgeon for a 6 week follow up visit a few weeks ago and he said that Damian's head looks really good. He said he's about 15 degrees asym. what does this mean? I didnt' go the appt my husband took him so I am not sure what this means? Is that alot of Assym or not? Is that the typical for plagio? Thanks in advance , mom of Damian 7 months old starband, MA Never miss a thing. Make your homepage.
Guest guest
I would band at 15mm which I think is in the severe category but fortunately at 7 months you can get that amount of assymetry into the normal range (0-3mm). It may take more than 1 band though but I would think it would be worth it. Our son was 8mm and they told us that was the high-end of moderate. We banded and got excellent results. Some of the plagio was still there after graduation but now 9.5 months later, I do have a hard time seeing it unless his head is wet but even then it is hard to see. > > Hey everyone - quick question. Guest guest
Hi Thanks for the explanation. Well I can't even imagine what he was before we put the starband on. He is 15 mm off now and we banded at 5 1/2 months at the beginning of Dec. Why would we need another helmet- couldn't we just keep in the one he has and keep him on it till he's 10 months. That's what his orthotists is reccomending. Also he seems to making progress very quick and in the 8 weeks or so he is still flat but there's definate rounding to the back of his head. Any thoughts? Thanks LISA Damian- 7 months starbandlka_236 <lka_236@...> wrote: I would band at 15mm which I think is in the severe category but fortunately at 7 months you can get that amount of assymetry into the normal range (0-3mm). Guest guest
I'm not sure I would assume 15 degrees meant 15mm of assymetry (but I could be wrong). I've never heard of measurements taken in degrees before (I know CT uses mm, and the StarBand orthotist I also saw said my son's assymetry was 11/16 of an inch), so I would suggest possibly calling the orthotist and asking them about it, if for no other reason than to share what you learn with the rest of us. I'm sure someone else would find it useful! It's great that your seeing improvement already! A second band would only be necessary if he grows out of this one sooner than the projected time and if you still wanted to work on more correction. StarBands have pretty thick foam though, so it seems probable it would last 4.5 months. Good Luck! in Raleigh Jake-17m DocBand 2/11/08 Jordan-4 > > > > Hey everyone - quick question. Guest guest
It sounds like the length that a child can wear a Starband is longer than the DOC band. The DOC band even if a child hasn't outgrown the band can only be worn 16 weeks as they say their band isn't effective after that point. My son could have gotten a little bit more correction; however, they said at 8 weeks of wear that he had outgrown the band and his plagio at that point was in the normal range so we didn't go for a 2nd band nor was it recommended. I've read that often times babies that have severe plagio need to wear more than one band to get the maximum amount correction possible or a baby that starts really young as they are growing so fast. Maybe parents that have needed to put their child in more than one band can chime in. Here are a few reasons besides severe plagio that could affect the number of bands needed (from my understanding)....isn't more foam to shave away, the holding pressures are gone, regression (rare), etc. Your ortho would know more than me so if she/he is saying that he can wear the band till 10 months then he probably will be able to! Hope that answers your questions. > > > > Hey everyone - quick question. Guest guest
hi thanks! Yes his ortho uses mm. The cranial surgeon is the who said he's off by 15 degrees. So i think I'll have to ask the ortho next time we're in what that means. They projected that he'd be in it for about 5 months or until he's 10 months old to prevent regression. They did tell us that after 8 months if we're happy with the results we can take it off during the day but put him in it when he naps or sleeps at night to prevent regression. So we're aming to have him out of it atleast during the day by the end of March or so. But I'll find out about the 15 degrees and let everyone know, LISA mom of Damian starband!nwilkens2275 <nwilkens2275@...> wrote: I'm not sure I would assume 15 degrees meant 15mm of assymetry (but I could be wrong).
