Guest guest
Welcome to the group! Bands typically refer to the DOC Band, STARband and Hanger Band. All of these bands are open on the top which is why they are referred to as a band rather than a helmet. A helmet would cover the whole head. Orthomerica, maker of the STARband, also makes some other model bands/helmets that are fully enclosed. There are also locally made bands/helmets that doctors will refer their patients to. A lot of times people will use the terms “band” and “helmet” interchangeably. Even though my son had a STARband I would refer to it as a helmet when talking to people as they usually got the concept of what a helmet was whereas calling it a band was more difficult to explain. Bands and helmets both work the same way if they are active; active bands/helmets focus on redirecting cranial growth toward greater symmetry. This is accomplished by maintaining contact over the prominent areas of the head, and allowing room for growth in the areas of flattening. Hope this helps!
