Guest guest
Hi, I am very new at this, my daughter is 3 months old and I know she has mild-mod plagio (I hope that's all, haven't seen the specialist yet). Anyway, I am waiting for the referral to go through. I was wondering if it's possible to have the consultation at craniotech before the neuro app. I am just anticipating it will be a long wait for her appointment, and would it be helpful to have a report from cranio with me for the dr. visit? Maybe I am totally wrong, please let me know what you think? Also, I think cranio's assessment early on would be a great baseline for the repositioning process. Does cranio typically have a long wait?? Also, does anyone know of a good way to buy memory foam for repositioning? Typically, how long have most of you waited for your neuro appoinment? At what point should I put my foot down and beg for a sooner one?? She's 3 months, and I asked how long the wait is and they said June (if it's not urgent). My pedi didn't even think a referral was necessary--she's one of those who say " she'll grow out of it " ! So I know my pedi will make it seem non-urgent.....any thoughts??? Last thing, my pedi doesn't think xrays are necessary. It sounds like most of your little ones had xrays right away. Should I wait and ask the neurosurgeon, or ask my pedi again?? She thinks I'm over- reacting, and our chemistry isn't very good right now. I have started repositioning so we'll see..... Sorry for all of the questions, I just have so much to figure out, and I'd be lost without all of you!!!!! Thanks, Maggie
Guest guest
Hi there. We were referred to a neurosurgeon when my son was 2 months old and couldn't get an appointment for 2 months. We didn't have any xrays. I'm not sure they give a complete picture for what they need to tell if the sutures are fusing prematurely, and our ped said she wasn't qualified to know for sure anyway, so we just went to the neuro. Once we made the appt with the neuro, he referred us for a CT scan, which my son had at 3 months old. But we didn't get the results until the appt at 4 months old. Very stressful! But the good news was that his sutures were normal and it was " just " plagio. Don't be surprised if the neuro tells you not to band. Most tend to be anti-banding. The one we saw said not to, so I trusted that it would " work itself out, " but it didn't. The one ped we saw a few times was also anti-banding. I ended up seeing another ped and a craniofacial surgeon who finally wrote the presription for me. An evaluation at Cranial Tech is free, and they do a great job of taking photos and measurements and it would be a great baseline for judging the success of repositioning. I have heard that a second evaluation (if you repo for a couple of months and want to chart your progress) costs $100 or a $150, I can't remember exactly which. But that might be worth it if you can avoid a band altogether. At 3 months old, I think there is time to wait for the appointment with the neuro (I wouldn't wait longer than 2 months though) and try repo in the meantime. Good luck and keep us posted! Guest guest
I just wanted to add that we didnt see a neurosurgeon or have an x-ray or anything like that. We asked both the people at Cranial Tech and also our pediatrician if there was any chance it was craniosynostosis, and both said no... that it looked like classic plagio, and that no further evaluations of the sutures were needed. I think some insurance companies might want the prescription to come from a neurosurgeon, but for us, we just went straight from pediatrician to band, and that worked for us
Guest guest
Thanks Pam, for everything. Like I said, I wouldn't know where to begin without this group of knowledgable parents. With the memory foam there are so many to choose from, do remember which thickness you bought?? I really appreciated the links you posted. I am so glad you are seeing great progress with your little one! Guest guest
We got 1 inch foam. I was afraid that getting much thicker could be a SIDS issue. As far as I know, there is no SIDS risk with memory foam, but I know firm mattresses are considered safer, so I wanted to be conservative. And when he started flipping onto his stomach to sleep, I took out the foam. Even the 1 inch did seem to help a bit. I think others have used 1.5 inch also. -Pam On 3/11/08, maggiestutz <maggiestutz@...> wrote: Thanks Pam, for everything.
