I wouldnt worry too much about it effecting his speech b/c children, even without a band will naturally learn a word then set it aside, not using it for weeks or sometimes even months as they concentrate on learning new thing

Though I suppose that is easy for me to say, my docband grad is 15 mo and still doesn't say a word

and says many different sounds. I'm guessing that it just sounds weird to him when the helmet is on but don't know for sure. He has been wearing it for a month now and I really thought he'd get over the
