Guest guest
Hi Sofia, We are in the exact same boat as you. My daughter (18 months on Wednesday) was casted right before Christmas and her helmet comes in on Thursday..and I have many of the same questions. She hates anything on her head..bows...hats..etc...and I am worried that she will figure out how to take it off...she is very strong willed. We are going with the Star Light band..so it may be different experience than Cranial Tech? ButI can definitely relate to you because we were also told by several drs that it would round out...and now they told us that this is the latest age that they were willing to band her at...I am really hoping for some good improvement...they told us she would need to wear it until her 2nd birthday. I would love to hear about his progress and experience when he begins. Good Luck! Plagiocephaly From: sofiam@...Date: Sat, 29 Dec 2007 02:35:31 -0600Subject: older kid, winter hats, clothes, etc Hi all,We decided to go ahead with Cranial Tech with our 18.5 month old son....I know this is a bit late, but Cranial Tech people say that he willstill benefit from it, although obviously the results would've beenbetter if we did this a year ago... (when four different docs said itwould go away by itself, and obviously, a year later it hasn't, so...)He's quite smart and I know he will absolutely hate this head band onhis head. He hates anything being out on his head - a winter hat, ahood, and pulls it all off in seconds. I can just imagine him mopingaround the house, begging me to pick him up all the time when he juststarts out with the band...I'm also very afraid his normally sunny, shiny and very happypersonality will turn sour after we do this to him...Anyone has experience with 'older' babies and their psychologicalreaction to this thing? Also, we live in Chicago, and it's cold here - what do you do forwinter hats over the bands? He walks outside quite a bit, even in thisweather, so what do you do, just buy a hat that's meant for a 5-yearold?And another question - his head is quite big for his age as it is, andwe sometimes have problems fitting his head through the shirt openingswhen we dress him/undress him...Will I have to buy all new larger shirts (just so they have a largeshead opening) for him? He'll drown in clothes meant for 4-5 year olds, and I really don't know how to sew...What do you all do about clothes/winter hats? And any ideas or thoughts on how to make this better for an 'older'baby who already shows his likes and dislikes very clearly...thanks,Sofia Get the power of Windows + Web with the new Windows Live. Guest guest
Hi Sofia – You will be surprised at how well most kids adapt to their bands. My son hated wearing hats and to this day still won’t wear them but he never had any problems wearing the band. In fact, he liked it so much he hated having it off! Even after he graduated from the band he still slept in it for a few nights as he couldn’t sleep well without it. For a hat, just buy one that is a few sizes larger, maybe a 3T or a 4T size, that will fit over the band. You can take the band off and on when you need to change clothes and then the size of the clothes isn’t an issue. However, if you don’t want to take it off and on I would recommend getting things that can be buttoned or zippered up the front or back, especially pyjamas. If you already have a lot of clothes for your son and don’t want to buy anything new, perhaps you can take his shirts to a seamstress to have an opening made in the shirt with a button added. Best of luck with the new band! Guest guest
Sophia and - I know this is an older post, but I was reading back and came across the fact that you have older babies. My son will be 17 months when he is banded (assuming the doctor gives us the prescription next week). Since you've had a few weeks with the band under your belts, can you share some more of your experience with me? Are you glad you did it? Has it been hard? Sophia, your post was like reading my own story. I too am worried about my little Jake's sunny disposition. How are things going so far? Guest guest
Hi , does the starband ortho have good experience with older babies? My daughter wore a starband for brachy (flat in back) and had excellent result. However on this board I have heard that cranial tech (cranialtech.com) has a better reputation for older kids. There is one in NC, but it is in Charlotte, so would be a long drive for you. I would probably check it out if you haven't. Since you have a very limited time to treat your baby you want to make sure you are getting the best treatment possible. Your starband ortho might be just as good, but I would want to investigate both. I have heard fewer people post about starbands with babies this age. -christine sydney 2 yrs starband grad > > > > > > Hi Sofia, > > > > We are in the exact same boat as you. Guest guest
Hi - Congrats on baby #2! How many months apart are they? the changes you will see in your daughter's head shape are going to be AMAZING! I was such a skeptic when we first had Damian put into his starband, but at his first appointment only 3 week later there was a significan change- he had changed 5 mm! And not only did the measurements indicate change we could visually see a difference- so stick with it and enjoy the baby! BY the way -- boy or girl and what's the name? Guest guest
Congrats on the new baby ! I'm sure you have your hands full... Thanks for updating me on your daughter's band. Can you tell me why you went with the Starlite band? I just read someone else's post today (I don't think it was you) that said something to the effect of the Starlite working better on older babies because there is no foam and therefore, the plastic applies more pressure and is therefore more effective on the harder (older) noggins. Is that true? I have my consultation for both the StarBand and DocBand next week, so I'm still trying to figure out the pros and cons. Cranial Tech has more experience with older babies, but I was only considering the StarBand as another option at this point. I can only assume that if the orthotist carries the StarBand, they also carry the Starlite and other versions as well, but I'll find out next week for sure. Just curious what the difference is, besides appearance. Thanks! in Raleigh Mom to Jake (16m) >> > Hi Sofia,> > We are in the exact same boat as you. And any ideas or thoughts on how to make this better for an 'older'baby who already shows his likes and dislikes very clearly...thanks,Sofia > > > > > > > __________________________________________________________> Get the power of Windows + Web with the new Windows Live.> http://www.windowslive.com? ocid=TXT_TAGHM_Wave2_powerofwindows_122007> > > > > > > > _________________________________________________________________ > Put your friends on the big screen with Windows Vista® + Windows Live™. > http://www.microsoft.com/windows/shop/specialoffers.mspx? ocid=TXT_TAGLM_CPC_MediaCtr_bigscreen_012008 >
Guest guest
The main reasons we went with the Starlite band were because the drs (plastic surgeon) referred us to that clinic, it was cheaper (we are paying out of pocket), it was closer, and we really liked the orthotist who would band her there. We also did meet with Cranial Tech and they were really nice too and they did have more experience with older children...but since both places said at her age we wouldnt get great results we went with the more convenient one. And...yes we were told that he thought that the starlite band would work better for her age than one with padding...we go in Feb 13th for measurements so we will find out if there was improvement in this first month then. Let me know which band you guys decide to go with. I'm sure you have your hands full...Thanks for updating me on your daughter's band. Thanks! in RaleighMom to Jake (16m)>> > Hi Sofia,> > We are in the exact same boat as you.
