Hi Krista!!!

Based on your description, I would say that he has a little bit of torticollis going on because he is favoring the right so much. Definitely mention that to your ped so that they can get you started with PT if that is in fact what is going on. The ridges are what concern me. I would mention cranio to your ped and have him or her check to see if they can feel his soft spots since they should still be pretty prominent at 3 months. If he can feel those, as we both know, it is probably not cranio. I didn't see any mention of a flat area in your post. . .have you noticed any flattening on the back right of his head? The signs of assymmetry that you speak of are consistent with plagio and also tort. Cranio is very rare as I'm sure you've read in any research you have done, but it NEVER hurts to ease your fears by having your ped check

for soft spots and if necessary order a CT.

It sounds like you have begun repo, so keep working on that. It helps a lot with the torticollis and can be preventative of plagio.

Good Luck!

New here... son may have plagio.

My son is 3 months old and about a month ago I noticed that he was forming ridges along his coronal suture lines. I am very familiar with cranio but at this point do not think that is what this is. Here are his "symptoms".. .

· He favors his right side to sleep and nap.

· He tends to always look to the right and has his headed titled a bit to the right too - I think this is a mild case or tortcollis (sp?).

· His forehead on the right side is slightly more forward and he has a higher forehead on this side too (again, hardly noticeable).

· The left side of his face is wider than the right and his temple on the left side is more indented.

· His eyes and brows are symmetrical and his head is perfectly round in the back. His ears appear to be lined up correctly too.

Starting this week I have been making him sleep on his less-preferred left side and making him turn his head to the left as well.

Any thoughts? Does this sound like plagio? He has his 4 month check-up on 4/2 and I will bring it up at that time with his ped. I really just want to know more information and calm my fears that it might be the onset of cranio.

Anyway... any help is appreciated.

Thanks,

-Krista-

Hi Sam! Thanks for the response. I have checked and both of his

soft spots are still open and quite large. My 2-year old son has

metopic synostosis, but he always had both of his soft spot open too.

So I am not convinced that is a true sign of cranio.

I guess what I don't understand is why his head is perfectly round in

the back, but lopsided in the front... so how could this possibly be

plagio? But if it was cranio I would think that his facial features

would be askew, and they are not.

Welcome-

I agree, it sounds like torticollis to me. My son preferred his

right as well and also had a tilt. Personally, I would suggest

possibly making an earlier appointment with the ped, rather than

wait almost 3 weeks for your well visit. The sooner he can start

physical therapy, the better, if it is in fact tort. The PT will

show you exercises that you will have to do at home (in addition to

periodic office visits), usually 3-5 times a day. So again, from my

experience, the earlier it can be diagnosed and treated, the better.

Also, the ridges and lack of a flat spot, also concern me. I'm

definitely not an expert on cranio, so I can't say one way or

another on that. But the classic sign of plagio is a flat spot of

some sort. If the back of his is completely round, I'm a little

confused. Can you post photos of his head so we can take a look? If

you do see the doctor sooner, I would mention your concerns on that

as well. A don't think many peds (if any) can diagnose cranio (ours

did not), but they can refer you to a specialist who can.

Good luck! And please keep us posted.
