Guest guest
Hi Kay- I don't believe the helmet should work as a bike helmet. I'm pretty sure it would not be up to regulation for that. Plus some helmets, like the DOCBand are almost completely open on top, where they could still get injured. Do you do a lot of biking with your baby? I've never heard someone ask your question before, but hopefully someone who bikes a lot could help you out. I would think you would have to put a bike helmet on top of the helmet? But I could be wrong. You might need to ask the orthotist about that. I'm not sure if they could be worn at the same time, you might have to take the helmet off to put the bike helmet on. If they only wore it 18 hours a day, you could miss out on a lot of growth and correction, and the helmet really wouldn't be used to it's fullest potential, and in some instances, would almost be pointless. It's really important to follow the recommended guidelines to get the maximum benefits of the helmet in the maximum amount of time. The helmet should not effect their balance at all. The DOCBand weighs only 5 ounces, and I believe the STARBand weighs only 6 ounces (not sure about Hanger but I think it's the same as Star). How old is your baby? Do you know what kind of helmet you would be getting? Please let us know if you have any other questions. Guest guest
I asked the same question about the bike helmet when my daughter was in a band, but nobody thought it was a good substitute :-) I never tried to fit a bike helmet on top, but it sounds difficult. As for 23 hours a day it is pretty important. The band holds prominent areas and directs growth to flat areas. Since the head can grow 24 hours a day you want the helmet on as much as possible so you don't miss any growth. The 1 hour a day the band is off is to clean the band and the head, and allow the band to dry before putting it on again. A few babies have a little trouble with the extra weight, but most don't. the Docband is a little lighter than the starband or Hanger. My daughter wore a starband and had no problems at all adjusting. She got the band at 5 mo and learned to sit shortly after, and met all her milestones on time or early. -christine sydney 2 yrs starband grad > > Does the helmet work as a bike helmet?
