Congratulations on the new baby! Have you tried a sleep positioner

like NightForm (www.nightform.com)?

They actually have you rotate your child’s head into 10 different

positions; not sure if you change it every sleeping period or if you use the

same position for 24 hours and then switch. My son’s plastic

surgeon recommends it to patients for repositioning but by the time we saw him

my son was too old to use it (they recommend using it from birth to 5 months).

Subject: [sPAM] new baby...how to prevent plagio?

Hi there,

My 20 month old son wore a DOC band from 7.5-9.5 months. We just had

our 2nd baby 10 days ago. I am alternating which way I have his head

facing (either right or left) when I lay him down. My question is

this...should I include looking straight up into my rotation of how I

lay him? He seems to have full ROM, but how can you tell this early?

Plus, our 20 month old seemed to have full ROM that even the ped. said

he did (but CT said he didn't).

Any other tips for preventing plagio or brachy would be much

appreciated.

Hello ....and Congrats on your new baby!!!! I would have to vote that rotating a looking straight up position would be a good thing. Anabel was born with Torticolis and I could tell from the very beginning....she preferred nursing when she was looking to the right and when I would position her the other way it was quite obvious that she was uncomfortable and if nursing...just didn't do as well in that position. She hated to be in any position that would mean she needed to look to the left....so this was my indicator.

The sleep positioner that was mentioned in another post would be a good idea and they make them so the baby is at a slight angle which helps aid in digestion too.

Hi ,

I remembered some more things to recommend...

alternate which end of the crib his head is at (so that is he looks

towards the door etc it will vary his head position). put toys on

different sides. alternate how you lay him on the changing table. make

sure you alternate when breast feeding, carry him with both arms...

basically you want to discourage any habits where he would rest in a

particular position regularly. and of course minimize time in bouncer,

car seat etc.

Hi there,

When I googled it again, here are a few links that popped up

when " prominent occiput " was in the google search thing.

http://www.geocities.com/beckwith_wiedemann/characteristics.html

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/2488951

Another search might be syndrome and prominent occiput as

that was one syndrome that popped up a few times with prominent

occiput but today those links aren't popping up.

I would think that the neurosurgeon would have done further testing

if he thought Greta could have one of these syndromes so I probably

wouldn't worry too much unless there are more characteristics than

an odd head shape. The good and the bad with the internet.

Good luck.

much!

Thanks ...it is always good to be reminded as to some

things that are recommending for preventing plagio. :)

Molly, I don't have the Night Form and I actually never bought a

sleep positioner since our ped. strongly advised against it. I've

gone back and forth about borrowing the Night Form from my sister

(her little one is exactly 6 months older than Grant). I know when

we were trying to figure out how to use the Night Form it seemed

rather confusing. My sister (I don't think ever used Night Form

with the varying positions because it was so confusing...I think she

just used it for a wedge). I was the one that told her to get the

Night Form as that is what was recommended to me but then when I

posted with questions about use the people that responded had

negative things to say. SO, I say all this to say that I have no

idea what to do with the sleep positioner thing.

,

yes, I saw these sights...I really didnt give them a second look because they were children that were born with some type of syndrome, and my Ped and Nuerosurgeon never even brought those syndromes up...They told me she was a normal child with a funny shaped head:)

Thanks for your input!~marcy
