Does anyone have an opinion regarding the use of acupuncture for

relieving the symptoms of MSA? My sister has had several different

accupuncturists working on her. Have you had it? Does it help you?

Dr. Low told us that it can't hurt.

Rob is using acupuncture, with the goal of relieving cramping in his

left foot and leg. The cramping is better, but it's hard to say

whether is due to the addition of Mirapex or the acupuncture. At any

rate it isn't hurting. Rob's doctor is fully aware of what we are

doing in this area.

For a while there was a person who was posting information about

accupuncture which seemed to imply that it could cure MSA or restore

lost function. There was considerable discussion on the list about

the merits of that suggestion.

Seems to me the important thing for those who are considering accupuncture

to keep in mind is that it may relieve symptoms -- but it's hard to

imagine that it could restore lost nerve function due to cell death.

My dad had accupuncture treatments to try to help his MSA. He had about a

dozen treatments last summer. He said he noticed an improvement in his

ability to urinate more naturally. He also had some pain relief in his knees

and ankles. He did not notice any improvement in drooling, edema or speech.

I am unclear as to whether the improvements have been maintained at this

point. He stopped going because of the expense and because it was about an

hour's drive.

Overall, I think he also found the experience to be very relaxing.
