Guest guest
You know, using periods in the right places and not stringing a bunch of sentences together with commas would certainly make it easier to read long posts. Most of the time, it just reads like rambling and I lose the point of what the poster is trying to say. AND, it reads as if the poster is just ranting and raving emotionally, not rationally. When that happens, I just give up. Maybe I'm missing important information that way, but it just doesn't seem worth trudging through. JMO. Guest guest
You are not alone in that feeling. A few breaks in the composition go a long way in keeping me reading. Most posts that make it to the bottom of the screen without any breaks are usually deleted without being read much past the first sentence. Guest guest
I hate to sound picky, but when a person posts without the use of punctuation, indentation, and/or paragraphs, I typically ignore the post. The same goes for posts by folks who don't know how to properly quote (like the digest user that quotes an entire digest) or those who don't take the time to reread their posts for clarity. Some posts I get are little more than a jumble of words and thoughts with very little cohesive thread due to spelling, grammatical, vocabulary and formatting/structural errors. I get around 1,000-1,500 e-mails a day and just don't have the time to interpret the postings of those who can't follow the simple rules of netiquette and conventional communication styles. Guest guest
Speaking of long posts...LOL... whatever happened to Anne? She kind of fell off the SB earth. It's a discussion, Sara. Nothing more, nothing less. I don't think anyone in this thread has directed their statements at an individual. A discussion on netiquette and similar topics is useful if for no other reason than to let those who are new to the online community know " how to act " . In any community, there are accepted standards of behavior; if one does not know them, then how could one act in accordance with them? As for picking on someone about it, I agree -- if you have time to do that, then you've too much free time. Occasionally, someone will be kind enough to take the time to correct someone and explain netiquette but more oft than not that draws the ire of the individual being corrected. That would be why I typically skip over posts that are way out there. I'm not speaking of someone who makes one or two errors in a posting sort of thing, I'm talking about the posting that fills a screen with no linebreaks, no periods, no capitalization, constant misspellings, and little to no structure. It's almost like speaking with someone who does not know the language -- it's really that bad sometimes. As to what does it have to do with supporting people in their quest for weight loss, it has a great deal to do with it. To support each other, we must be able to communicate. If someone's postings are being skipped or ignored altogether then there's not much communication going on and very little support. The most experienced members of this or any other group are usually the ones you want responding to your messages. (Makes sense, they have the most useful knowledge typically.) These are also typically the same users who read large volumes of e-mail and simply skip over the postings of those who cannot conform to netiquette. Better to know than to wonder. FWIW....
