Guest guest
She's really cute, but I do see the problem with her smile. I can see her brachy was severe from the photos, but did she have asymmetry (plagio) too? With plagio it is not uncommon to see a crooked smile too. I wonder if they are just correcting the brachy at this point, so the facial asymmetry is staying the same/getting worse? Do you have her measurements? I think a lot of plagio babies have a crossbite. In addition to her smile, one cheek looks fuller and her eyes aren't symmetric (one slightly smaller than the other). I would ask your ortho & /or doctor about her asymmetry and see if that is something that can be corrected with a helmet (this one or maybe a 2nd band). Usually facial asymmetry improves when the head is made more symmetric. With facial asymmetry you also need to make sure she doesn't have torticollis (tort) and if she does do PT for that. If you look in the mirror facial asymmetry is usually more obvious. Look at this plagio severity assessment (see link) at the bottom you'll see the facial asymmetry. I think Avery's face looks like number 2 on this page. http://www.cranialtech.com/medicalinfo/assessment/plagiocephaly.pdf It does look like you've gotten a lot of rounding in the back. -christine sydney 2 yrs starband grad > > My 10 1/2 month old daughter had moderate - severe brachycephaly and > began wearing a Starband at 7 1/2 months. Guest guest
Hey there- I responded to your message on the All About Plagio board regarding the crossbite issue. I just wanted to respond here to tell you that Avery's head looks WONDERFUL! That is really great correction for brachy and she's not even done yet! I would be thrilled, I hope you are! I hope you get some answers about her crossbite. Please keep us posted. Guest guest
Could she be grinding her teeth in the picture? My son had plagio and every time that he was getting a tooth he would grind is teeth so if I had taken a picture at that time his smile may have looked crooked too. I doubt it has anything to do with the helmet but it could have to do with the brachy but i'm not sure. I would think that as the brachy is corrected that the crossbite would get better too. Avery has recieved great correction so far. You'll have to post more pictures when she graduates. It may be worth taking Avery to a pediatric dentist. I would ask your dentist or pediatrician for a referral. Good luck with getting answers on her crossbite. lisa > > > > My 10 1/2 month old daughter had moderate - severe brachycephaly > and > > began wearing a Starband at 7 1/2 months. Guest guest
Hi, My sister is a pediatric dentist...and i asked her some questions about crossbites, etc. Anyway, she said that they dont usually fix crossbites till they are a little bit older...and sometimes the dentist may refer you to a orthodonist. She said to see your pediatric dentist and they would probably be able to give you all the info you need. Some people see a pediatric dentist by the age of one but most will go by the age of two. I hope some of that info helps you....and Avery is sooo cute by the way and her correction is great! Guest guest
Hi again- I already responded, but I just had a realization I wanted to share. I just ordered a bunch of pictures from Snapfish and I'm really behind on ordering, so a lot of them were from a year ago. I was looking at the earlier photos of my son Jake when he only had a handful of teeth and noticed that he tended to look like he had a crossbite in quite a few photos as well, though I don't remember noticing it at the time. But now, a year later, he has a full set of baby teeth (molars included) and doesn't appear to have that crossbite look at all anymore. So I'm beginning to think that it could be just a combination of them getting used to having teeth, the odd look they have when they only have a few teeth or ones that haven't come in all the way, and maybe grinding or playing with their new teeth. Once they get used to them, they come out all the way, and/or maybe as the plagio/brachy improves (my son did have some natural improvement over the year, but not enough for my liking), the crossbite improves. I definitely think it could be something that you see go away after a while longer. It still wouldn't hurt to see a pediatric dentist though. One of the practices near us actually does a free eval for babies under 18 months, so you might want to research that possibility in your area.
