Re: Can head growth be affected by helmet?

Unless the orthotist is doing something very wrong, the band should not restrict head growth. Have you been in for regular adjustments of the band? If his head shape is improving, then the size should be increasing, since the band works by directing growth (and thus only works when the baby's head grows). Very odd, but it's good that you're seeing a neurologist, and I would bring it up with the orthotist too, just to see whether he/she has any opinion on why this might be happening. Is Jack gaining weight well and getting taller? Have you talked to your pediatrician about it?

Hello,My son Jack is 9 months old and has positional plagio, low muscle tone and torticollis. He has been in a Starband since October. We have seen almost immediate improvement in his head shape, but we are

concerned about his head size. Since Sept.,his head has not grown. At 4 months,it was 17.5 inches and at his Feb. 9 month appt. it remained the same. We have had measurements at 6 and 8 months,as well.Is it possible that the Starband could be redirecting his head to grow

vertically? We are seeing a neurologist on 2/21 to assess this issue, but I am hoping for a simple reason. Has anyone else had a similar situation? Thank You!EvettChgo/Naperville

We have visited the orthotist on a monthly basis, and it is worrisome to me that we have actually not seen deep red marks on his head. The helmet fits higher on his head so I know that there has been vertical growth, but not circumferential. I know there is a genetic component to his head shape,as my husband has a rectangular head, but growth at this stage should be rapid. As for ht/wt., Jack is 20.5 lbs. and 29.5 inches at 9 months. do you have an pictures that you can compare to see if his head is

growing vertically? This shouldn't be the case, but if the band is

causing it you want to catch it as soon as possible. I would also

think if this was the case the head would be irritated from

excessive pressure. I have heard of a babies head growing up a bit

so that the opening in the top left an imprint on the top of the

head (this shouldn't happen). Are you seeing anything like that?

We do not have pictures, but we have noticed the placement of his "anchor points" on his Starband have moved upward. For example, the anchors on the sides of his cheeks used to touch his chin and now they are midway up his cheek. We have set up an appt. for another casting because I believe the old helmet has been adjusted to the max. There have been no red marks on the top of his head.
