Guest guest
I have also suffered badly from despersonalization/derealization. It all started after a series of panic attacs when I was 16 and it lasted for several yaers. Then it got somewhat better with time, although never completely gone. I guess I developed a panic dissorder. I also had agoraphobia and eventually OCD. All this things are anxiety-related problems. At the same time I was vomiting, loosing weight and hair... I can't be sure but I suspect it all was a thyroid/adrenal crisis. I remember having panic attacks as a child also and I suspect (doctor also thinks so) I have had hashis since childhood. All my family: father, mother and sister have hashis. I can't help believing the main source of my anxiety in hypothyroid (also adrenal) related. Interestingly one of my main sensations when I take T3 (every dose almost) is that my nostrils open up and my shoulders and neck relax, is a wonderful, anxiety relieving feeling... I really hope all my so called " mental " problems will start improving sistematically once I am optimized with T3.

Panic attacks can be adrenaline pumping as a result of low cortisol OCD type things (including a tune stuck in your head, counting steps or paving slabs etc) can be hypo, Val reported lots of odd things like that clearing when she got her thyroid sorted at last Nick -- for more information on RT3 and Thyroid Resistance go to www.thyroid-rt3.com
Guest guest
So sad to see so many people have had this, but on the other hand, at least we can support each other. I had my first panic attack at 14, with DP that stayed with me for several months afterward. Back then, they didn't even have SSRIs. No one knew what serotonin was. Of course, they ran blood work on me, but said it was normal. I would Love to see what that bloodwork showed! I remember feeling so spaced out all the time and like I was fading away -- just like I do now when my cortisol is too low! I'm not saying that ALL DP is from low cortisol. I firmly believe low serotonin plays a part, too, for many people. But the stress that causes the depletion of serotonin could certainly come from having low cortisol I would think. And since for so many this flares with stress, it also makes perfect sense it's also an adrenal issue, whether you're producing too much adrenaline from low cortisol induced by stress or you're just producing too much adrenaline from stress, period. The worst part was growing up thinking I had this horrible " mental illness " as no one even bothered to say I had " panic disorder. " I thought I was crazy. :-( Luckily for me, the DP always would fade away after a few months. Except this last episode this year. And now that I've increased the HC to 25, and started taking some 5htp, it's finally going away, thank god. I DO think the DP will definitely get better for you, , as you improve the thyroid issues and adrenals, if that's an issue, too.
