How long does a child wear a helmet for typically?

Hi there,

After doing repositioning for a little while, we now have to band our

son (repositioning help to go from plagio to now brachy). He got

casted on Thursday and now we just need to deal with this news until we

get the band. Although we kind of knew, this was coming, we had heard

from various source that kids usually wear the helmet for about 6-8

weeks. However, we were shock to learn that they recommended more that

he wears it for like 6 mths until he's 1 year old. Is it common? Is it

because brachy takes longer?

I think it depends on the age and how severe the plagio is. My daughter started wearing her band when she was almost 8 months old and we were told that she will have to wear it at least 4 months (and that that 3-5 months is the average time spent in a band) and that we might need to go with a second band to completely correct the flat spot and her facial asymmetries. I have also heard that brachy is harder to correct and that is probably the reason why your son might have to wear his longer.

Our daughter had brachy and plagio - we were told she would wear it

for anywhere from 4 - 8 months and she started wearing it at 8

months. She was in it for 5 months and outgrew it (just last week)

so they decided she did not need another band because we had

received GREAT correction during the 5 months and that all that

remained is a small flat spot on the back of her head which is

covered with hair. The time in the helmet really depends on how

much growth they have while in the helmet - and it requires you keep

that thing on the 23 hours a day! Good luck!
