Guest guest
Hi Laureen, I have no hard numbers, but the incidence of gout does seem to be higher among those with kidney disease in general (not just IgAN in particular). Prior to our involvement with kidney stuff, I did not know a single person with gout. Now I know five or six. What is your interest in gout? Cy llinst wrote: Hi. Guest guest
Laureen, Yes, I had terrible gout before transplant and even worst posttx. My Neph told me that one of my meds (prograf) increases uric acid. It's all ok now since I switched to Rapamune. Take care, Jing llinst wrote: Hi. Guest guest
For some people it can be a part of having kidney disease in general. I developed it at age 22 and am on a daily dose of allopurinol to keep it at bay. Kathleen > > Hi. Does anybody know if gout can be a part of having IgAN? Guest guest
-I just got back from the DR and he said I have gout in my shoulder. I know people with IgAN can get joint inflamation, and I think that is basically what gout is??? I looked up on the web and it said gout is where your body produces too much uric acid and the kidneys aren't functioning well enough to rid the uric acid?? I was curious if more people had gout with their disease. Guest guest
As kidney function worsens the kidneys have a harder and harder time cleaning out the waste, and some people get high levels of uric acid that build up over time. Gout is where the uric acid (if it's a high level) in your blood crystalizes and lodges in a joint, kind of like tiny, tiny grains of sand. I know that most people get gout in one of the big toe joints, but it could be any joint. Mine shows up in the toe next to my big toe. The joint gets very inflammed and red and it is agony to move or put anything on top of it. Oddly enough, it's even agony for it to stay in one position for an extended period of time. Before we found out what the problem was we honestly thought that the bone was broken in there and I could not walk on it at all. Without treatment the acute flareup will usually subside in about 3-5 days, with treatment they will be gone in about 12-24 hours. I had foot surgery, one on each foot - at separate times, to correct some pretty problematic bunions and the surgery triggered a gout attack at the site of the surgeries - both times. It was bad enough that the pain pills they gave me did nothing. Luckily the colchecine that I take for acute attacks worked pretty quickly. I don't know what the Igan inflammation is like, but gout is somewhat common for long term kidney patients.
