I had it years ago when I had adrenal problems before, and when I had it again several months ago. It will sort of come and go. I am betting it's major adrenal/thyroid connected. I understand completely how you feel! Try to just remember that you are not alone in this, and it's a symptom of the illness. It WILL pass!

Thanks for you support. I must admit it is the hardest symptom to live with for

me at the moment. It gives me hope that once my system is in balance again that

it will clear up.

I agree, is the hardest symptom! I experienced it (and derealization also) very

strongly at 16, after a series of panic attacks. I didn't even knew what it was,

I thought I had gone mad or maybe I was even dead. It decreased in intensity but

lasted for years. I am much better now. Now I believe that episode was the

bigginig of my thiroid/adrenal crisis (but who knows). From all the problems I

have experienced in my life that was the worse. I just can't describe the utter

fear and depresion I felt.

I really hope you get better,

I found this through a wiki search...

A study of undergraduate students found that individuals high on the

depersonalization/derealization subscale of the Dissociative Experiences Scale

exhibited a more pronounced cortisol response. Individuals high on the

absorption subscale, which measures a subject's experiences of concentration to

the exclusion of awareness of other events, showed weaker cortisol responses.[8]

^ Giesbrecht, T.; T. Smeets, H. Merckelbac and M. Jelicic (2007).

" Depersonalization experiences in undergraduates are related to heightened

stress cortisol responses " . J. Nerv. Ment. Dis. 195 (4): 282–87.

doi:10.1097/01.nmd.0000253822.60618.60. PMID 17435477.

Thanks so Margery for posting the links to my DP experiences. I hope it helps

others.

I've had it on and off since I was 14 and EVERY time came on after a stressful

event or stressful time.

Of course, they put me on SSRIs and benzos (which actually helped) and it always

passed, but the WORST ever was this year when I got way too low on cortisol. For

me, it was definitely low cortisol and probably low serotonin as well from not

having enough cortisol for t3 to make serotonin (which t3 is needed for in the

brain among other things.)

I wonder now if all my past episodes were due to my adrenals? Probably. How sad,

but I can tell you that after being afraid to even leave the house alone, I am

going on a trip by MYSELF tomorrow and I am FLYING! :-))

Have faith and the DP Manual is EXCELLENT. Just listening to the guy's Irish

accent distracts one from the DP. ;-)

Kathleen,

my experience is somewhat similar to yours. I just wanted to add, that

benzodiazepines also helped me(I also ended up taking anafranil for OCD, which

also helped, but I think benzodiazepines where particularly helpful for the

depersonalizacion feelings). I know this does not solve the underlaying problem,

but when I was at my worse and I didn't have anything to easy my suffering it

would have been " life saving " for me to know these little pills could give me a

break.

I am not recomending them as a solution, but in desperate situations, perhaps

could be a wellcome break...

Just a thought,

This is OT for this group, and I do not like to see benzo's promoted in

ANY way. While I realize they MAY be useful until you can get HORMONES

straightened out, they are NOT a fix. Mental problems are usually caused

by hormone imbalances which cause neurotransmitter issues. This is a

fact from a very good doctor friend of mine that used to be a

psychiatrist and is now a hormone specialist. I have NEVER seen anyone

suffering form lack of Benzo;'s but I have seen thousands of people with

low T3. PLEASE remember this as it is a major gripe of mine. I have also

been through addiction, to not only antidepressants but to just about

every drug known to be addictive and ALL of it was due to low hormones

including alcoholism. Had I stayed on ANY of them my hormones would not

have been able to heal me and I would have been stuck in that HELL for

life. Maybe Benzo's would have saved my Mom;s life in stead of the

suicide she chose, but I would put my money on a simple T3 that would

have helped quicker and better and permanently.

It upsets me that my post could be interpreted as promoting benzos (or

antidepressants), and I appologize for insisting in an off topic thread but,

please, allow me to explain myself.

I just wanted to share what helped me (in the past) during really, really dark

moments. I never took benzos systematicaly, only ocasionally, but them and

Anafranil helped me to have a life when I was some sort of a living dead, at 24,

(so I can only be grateful I took them).

But, you are right, those were darkest times, when there was not an option, but

I hope, with all my heart, that we have a better option now and that fixing our

hormones will take us to real mental health.

The thing is we need ot be careful in talkign about releif in this

manner. Others may get the wrong opinion! I took speed and drank through

the worst of my years of depression but I certainly would not advise

anyone to do that either! LOL But it did keep me alive.
