I've read on these boards that just being functionally hypo for so long and being on Synthroid for 30 years could cause some severe inflamation. I'm sure it's the low iron, but how do I correct this problem if I can't take any iron due to Hashis? I don't know where to go with this if my hypo is creating the inflammation and the inflammation is creating the RT-3 hypo problem. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. I'm stumped. Guest guest
Val, Is there any recommended amount to take daily and in what form? I'm very carb sensitive so have meat three times a day (usually turkey or lamb) so I'm getting lots of iron in my food. It seems to just be converting to storage ferritin and not to anything functional. Would supplementing iron be any different? Michele > > > >> Just had my iron labs done. Guest guest
Here's Val's standard iron recommendation: 150-200 mg elemental iron daily, many here do best on bisglycinate, taken at the same time as vitamin C and taken in at least two doses for better absorption. Here's a link to bluebonnet iron bisglycinate, which lots of people on this group have had good results with, 7 capsules a day supplies 189 mg elemental iron: http://www.iherb.com/Bluebonnet-Nutrition-Chelated-Iron-90-Vcaps/11571?at=0 My local Whole Foods is now carrying bluebonnet, so I don't have to pay shipping. We have gotten good reports on Solgar Gentle Iron, as well. I don't think the iron you are taking is converting into ferritin. With your low % saturation, it looks more like you have overall low iron, with a ferritin result falsely high due to inflammation and/or other reason(s). > > > > > >> Just had my iron labs done. Guest guest
Yes it would. But I have to wonder are you on adrenal support? Low cortiosl causes inflammation of it's own and cortiosl is the body's naturla antiinflammatory And thew high inflammaiton suggest you might need it. >> >> >> http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/NaturalThyroidHormonesADRENALS/ >> http://faqhelp.webs.com/ >> >> http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/RT3_T3/ >> http://www.thyroid-rt3.com/ >> > Val, Is there any recommended amount to take daily and in what form? Guest guest
Margery, thanks for that good information. I'll check my local food co-op to see if they have either of the suggested iron supplements and then check iherb after that. Michele > > > > > > > >> Just had my iron labs done. Guest guest
Val, yes I am on adrenal support, 25mg for about two months now. I tried getting on T-3 last week and just felt not normal--kind of hot and angry so there is still a puzzle piece missing in the whole picture. I'm assuming it's the low functional iron but maybe I'm wrong. I'm not sure how to investigate further on the inflammation problem. It could be so many things. Guest guest
Michele, when my RT3 problem showed up, I was started on 5mcg of T3 twice a day. I've been titrating it up ever since. I'm now up to 70mcg and feeling much better. I don't think you would get much improvement on 12.5 mcg. I had to titrate up at the rate of 5mcg. every two weeks or so. It's not magic and it's not instant, but it does work. I don't take HC at all. Your doctor might decide to give you an antibiotic to take care of an infection. Along with that I would take acidopholus 3 or 4 times a day to prevent an overgrowth of yeast. I would give the T3 more time and titration to work for you. <>Roni Immortality exists! Guest guest
You might try eating eggs, spinach, kale and other dark green leafy vegetables along with what you are already doing. These things are usually not instant. <>Roni Immortality exists! It's called knowledge! Guest guest
Hi Roni, thanks for your input. It wasn't so much that I didn't get any improvement with the T-3, it was more that I didn't feel good on the small amount I did take. I can try to break the Cytomel into smaller bits and try it again, but I'm going to do a couple of weeks of Solgar's gentle iron (I did find it at my health food store) first and then give it another whirl. As for eggs and spinach etc., I eat these already along with lots of red meat and have for several years now and it still hasn't brought up my iron (aside from my ferritin). Thanks for the tip on acidophilus. I'll keep that in mind if my doc suggests an antibiotic. So far he hasn't mentioned it and we are waiting for some stool testing results to come back to see what that might tell us. Happy 4th! Michele > > > > Just had my iron labs done.
