12 month old - moderate plagio -- are we too late?

Our daughter is almost 12 months old and we are a little ( a lot??)

late in considering a cranial band/helmet for her. Her head is flat

across the back. We are just wondering if there are other parents who

started their child with a helmet this late. We went to Hanger -- the

orthotist said that because of the late stage she could not vigoroulsy

recommend banding -- but that we might get some improvement.

Thanks for any thoughts you can share with us,

Hello. There have been MANY people who got their babies banded

around 12 mo, some even later and still got pretty good correction.

I would certainly go for it. ANY correction is better than none, and

a lot people who banded older babies were very pleased with the

results and pleasantly surprised with how much correction they did

get.

Good luck!

Hi ,

You might try going to your closest Cranial Tech location for a free evaluation. I believe they will band up to 18 months.

Many babies have been banded at 12 months and older with great results. The correction may come slower but definitely can happen. Hopefully parents of babies in the same age range will chime in. Good luck with your decision.

12 mo is certainly not too late. Lots of parents have seen good

correction at this age. However I'm not sure I would want to go with

an ortho who doesn't have experience with older babies. I think

checking out cranial tech as Candace suggested is a good idea. The

results won't likely be as dramatic as with a younger baby, but they

should still be good.

Hi -

My son Jake just got his DocBand today (!!!! and is sleeping very

peacefully with it right now!!!!) and he is 17 months old. Obviously,

I cannot attest to what kind of results older babies get yet, but I

can encourage you to go for it, because a little bit is still better

than nothing. At least that's what I've been telling myself! I had the

choice between a StarBand in my hometown and a DocBand 2.5 hours away.

The StarBand ortho sounded like your Hangar ortho - willing to try but

not really sure we'd get any results. I ended up feeling a lot more

comfortable going to Cranial Tech for the DocBand. About 20% of their

new patients each year are over the age of 1 (that's out of 60-80 new

patients a month at my location). Compared to the handful that the

StarBand ortho has seen (less than that really, like 2-3), that was a

huge deciding factor for us. The therapist at CT was confident that we

should band and that we would see results and they said out of 3

babies that were banded recently at 16 months, 2 were exceeding

expectations and the other was doing as well as expected (which is

still good). And they also said the oldest baby they had banded was 29

months (yes 29, not 19), and they regularly band up to 24 months.

Do you have a CT anywhere near you? I would definitely suggest going

for an eval if you can. I hope that in a few months my son will be one

of the older baby success stories. Good luck on your banding journey!

Keep us posted!

Here is a case study done at CT of a 19.5 month old that in my

opinion recieved great correction.

http://www.cranialtech.com/treatment/casef.html The results at CT

should still be good but possibly not as good as that of a younger

baby. In my opinion, what do you have to lose? You'll definitely

get some correction. :)
