I am new to the group also and in Charlotte. I do not understand what the measurements mean and would love anyone who does to let us know. I am just torn on what to do and know it is harder for me to decide than anything else. If anyone does understand the measurements, could you let us know? I have tried to look it up and CT did explain it to me, just trying to understand from a parent's perspective. Thanks.

New from Charlotte, NC

Hi everyone. My son, who is 7 months old, was just casted today. We should be receiving our Doc band on April 9. The casting went much better than I expected. My DS only cried for a minute, when his milk ran out. What a trooper he is. Other than that, it didn't really seem to bother him. Now I am just waiting to get the band and get this process rolling.I see around about how many mm the baby's heads are measuring. Is that cranial or skull asymmetry? I was just curious because I was wondering how severe my son is. I don't really understand the measurements I am looking at.Are there any folks from the Charlotte, NC area? Let me know if there are and maybe we can discuss how things are going. It would be nice to have a local support group in the area. Oh, I also have a 2 1/2 year old son. Thanks,Jenn

We drove to Charlotte from SC, depending on where in Charlotte yuo are we are 2 hrs from there, it took us usually a bit under 2 hrs to get to CT but only takes about 2 hrs to get to Concord Mills Mall or USA Baby too or the Charlotte Babywearing meetings at the hospital. There are several band moms here in the area I live (near Columbia, SC) I saw what I assumed to be a Hanger the other day at the mall. A mom at storytime and the secretary at my dds schools granddaughter both had Starbands. I met a lady at Walmart and another at storytime that had docbands as well as the granddaughter of the secretary at my dds old school. At our church we had another docband baby, another who had FOUR docbands and there is a baby currently in a docband there. Talk about a small world even, if anyone saw the pics of the Halloween bands for Charlotte on CTs website, there are actually 2 Pittsburgh Steelers football players there. The 1 is my son, the other my sons nurse ran into at the fair last year she was taken by surprise when she not only saw another band but one decorated just like my sons.

As for measurements I think it varies, there are probably 5 different measurements. I do not have ds handy so maybe someone else does. But there is cranial index which is a percentage that measures Brachy then there is cranial vault, traditional cranial vault, skull base and eye and ear assymetry to name a few. From what I have seen on here if a child has brachy they will only give the percentage for their measurement so you will see a # in the 80s or 90s, if they have plagio they either only have assymetry in 1 meausrement and give that or they have assymetry in several measurements but the assymetry #s are all close to teh same so they only give 1, that measurement tends to be between 6 and 20 for before treatment and 0-9 for after treatment. For example, my sons cranial vault and skull base were 15 mm assymetry and traditional cranial vault was 17 (if my memory serves me, I know they were 15, 15 and 17) so I will tend to just post that he was a 15. if they have brachy and plagio they tend to post both #s. If you go here it explains how they take the different measurements, where they measure from for each measurement so you can understand better where his assymetry comes from. According to at Charlotte I was told that 0-3 mm assymetry is considered normal but most normal ppl measure in the 4-6 mm range. 3-9 is considered mild plagiocephaly and may or may not warrant banding. according to several insurance company websites as well as Hanger a lot of insurances wont band under 9 or 10 mm. 9-15 is considered moderate plagiocephaly and 15+ is severe. For brachycephaly you can figure that out on this same website.

We go to the CT in Charlotte. did our initial consultation

and told me that the two numbers to look at out of all the

measurements they took were the traditional cranial vault and skull

base asymmetry. My son measured 15 mm of asym for both. The

traditional cranial vault is the top of the head. They measure from

the right temple/forehead to the back left of the head, then from

the left temple/forehead to the back right of the head. The

difference between those two numbers gives you the asym measurement

(so my son was 165mm front rt to back lt and 150mm front lt to back

rt; 165-150=15mm of asym). The skull base asym indicates the ear

misalignment. Again, they measure the right ear to the back left of

the head, then the left ear to the back right of the head and the

difference is the asym. (my son was 110-95=15mm). I was told he is

high end moderate as far as his severity, so I've been going with 5-

10 is mild, 10-15 is moderate, 15+ is severe. told me

that " normal " is 2-4mm.

Unfortunately I don't know much about the brachy numbers. Everything

I just wrote is for plagio only. If you're dealing with brachy, let

us know and someone else may be able to help you there.

Thank you for all the information. I will have to take a look at it

all. We are in the southern part of Charlotte, right on the border

to SC, not far from Carowinds. It is a nice area and fairly calm

area. Again, thanks for the info. I will take a look at the links.

I know where you are coming from. It is so overwhelming to think of

what will happen if you don't get it done and what all the numbers

mean. I am trying to get as much information as possible. I

received a response earlier with some helpful information. Read

below and there are a couple of links. Have you decided if you are

going to band or not? How old is your child? Good luck to you and

please feel free to email me any time.

As for measurements I think it varies, there are probably 5 different

measurements. I do not have ds handy so maybe someone else does.

But there is cranial index which is a percentage that measures Brachy

then there is cranial vault, traditional cranial vault, skull base

and eye and ear assymetry to name a few. From what I have seen on

here if a child has brachy they will only give the percentage for

their measurement so you will see a # in the 80s or 90s, if they have

plagio they either only have assymetry in 1 meausrement and give that

or they have assymetry in several measurements but the assymetry #s

are all close to teh same so they only give 1, that measurement tends

to be between 6 and 20 for before treatment and 0-9 for after

treatment. For example, my sons cranial vault and skull base were 15

mm assymetry and traditional cranial vault was 17 (if my memory

serves me, I know they were 15, 15 and 17) so I will tend to just

post that he was a 15. if they have brachy and plagio they tend to

post both #s. If you go here it explains how they take the different

measurements, where they measure from for each measurement so you can

understand better where his assymetry comes from. According to

at Charlotte I was told that 0-3 mm assymetry is considered normal

but most normal ppl measure in the 4-6 mm range. 3-9 is considered

mild plagiocephaly and may or may not warrant banding. according to

several insurance company websites as well as Hanger a lot of

insurances wont band under 9 or 10 mm. 9-15 is considered moderate

plagiocephaly and 15+ is severe. For brachycephaly you can figure

that out on this same website.

I did see the Steelers photos at Charlotte CT and was all excited

because I planned to paint my son's DocBand as a Steelers helmet too

(I'm from Pittsburgh). That will be my last paint job I think. I've

been switching it up every 3 weeks. I did Cars, Superman, and now

he's wearing a Titleist (golf) " hat " . We should have 2 more paint

jobs before he's done. I wanted to test out the whole painting thing

before I got to the Steelers, and after I did the first design, I

realized that a) the paint job doesn't last that long without

numerous touch ups (at least with older more active babies) and B) I

get bored with the design after a couple of weeks anyway. My husband

is a Detroit Tigers fan, so I am also going to do their baseball

batting helmet, which will be my next design. He should have 5 in

all. Everytime I repaint it, people are like, " oh, he got a new

helmet! " and I have to explain that no, I just repainted it. But

every time they ask that, I always think, " can you imagine, dropping

$3000 every 3 weeks just to change the design?!?!?!? " I know they

have no idea how much it cost, but I just can't help chuckling over

the thought!

We have made the appt for the casting on April 7th. Had to wait for family to be in town to help with our two other little guys at home. I am still very torn. When we look at his head, we do see the issue, but others do not. He is a very low moderate case and I do not believe it would not correct at all on it's own, but am being told it will not. We are having him measured again when we go back just to see if there has been any change since he is now sleeping better and on the correct side of his head. I still find him on the other side, but he is spending much more time sleeping soundly due to his age and staying on the correct side. I also tilted his mattress up due to a cold at the same time and wonder if this is helping due to tort and he is more comfortable. Our insurance will not cover it and money is not the deciding factor for us, although 3K is a lot for us at this

time. Did I see that you had your casting appt? What were your child's measurements? How did you decide? There will be many decisions as parents, I know. I am notorious for taking forever to make decisions. Just my nature.

I actually said it to someone one time though, I just get so many comments at how neat it is to protect his head lol so I said to one person who said that that it wasnt to protect his head that I certainly dont encourage him to bang and fall on something that cost 3 grand lol. Though it did come in handy b/c he was learning to walk, he frequently bumped his head on the pews at church crawling around in front of them, he took a tumble down our stairs (thankfully he rolled so the only thing that hit was his head which was protected), and he took a soccer ball to the head (hit by an 11 yr old so not a light hit).

I also got bored so we changed every 2 wks, many times I changed it every week. That was when I decided to keep records of it with the blog I did for his " band of the week " . Steelers he kept for 3 wks though b/c he got it for Halloween as he was a steelers football player for halloween (with his own cheer squad since he has 3 sisters who were steelers cheerleaders) but we did a football themed birthday so he wore it through his party (he was due on halloween but 8 days late so his birthday was 11/8), after his party we changed it to a birthday theme for his actual birthday. We had plans for 1 last helmet, a space theme but he graduated the day after his birthday so those stickers I just found still sitting on my desk. His helmet now resides on his headsicle still with a birthday theme.

My dh doesnt really watch any other sports but is from Pittsbirgh so he still likes them even when he cant watch so it was just steelers. Of course I couldnt get anything local for his helmet since we arent in PA, all the decals on ebay were too big for his band and the pack of all the NFL teams in round sticker logos I found at walmart were too small so I ended up getting sicker paper to print out the logo and stripe. I had to order their jersey and cheerleading outfits from Pittsburgh. My family I guess would be Dolphins fans since I grew up in FL. Or I suppose Gamecocks (college football, BIG here) or Inferno (hockey) would have been cute (we are in South Carolina). I think my dad would have liked Pistons (my parents and I were all born in Detroit) but they dont wear helmets in Basketball lol. Nascar is a common helmet theme around here though
