HI Dawn,

My daughter had a similar thing.. her's was a ridge... that was shaped like a line... on the top of her head, perpendicular to her hairline... right where the edge of the DOCband's cap came.

My daughter's never went away (even though they said it would). It feels like the plate of her skull, right where that suture is, is uplifted a bit, to form a bumped ridge.

I think it was because the cap part of the DOCband held down her head and the open area next to it, is the area where her head grew upward.

Some others have reported soft tissue bumps, so maybe that's what your is, I hope so, so it can go away!!

Regards,

Colleen

Question about bump/ridge on top of head

I have a question and I hope that someone has had the same issue and that it resolved itself. is about to graduate from her Docband next week and her head looks great. She does have a bump/ridge on the top of her head and we were told that it may or may not go away as her head grows. Has anyone come across this? You don't see it but if you feel the top of her head you notice it. I know it isn't a big deal but I am a little freaked about it. Thanks!Dawn

Hi Dawn,

My son also had the ridge when he was born it went away at about 3

months.

Just as a side note we are 2 months in and have went from 14mm to

about 5mm we went in today on his 6month birthday I'm so excited they

said to plan on 4 months total but he may not have to be in it that

long. Also wondering if I was the odd one out we went to get his

photo's done today and I couldn't bring myself to take off the helmet

for any pictures, I just did not think they would look right. I am

going to post my favorite tonight (Evan )

My son didn't have a noticeable ridge until he was out of the band.

I don't know if it was always there and I just didn't notice or

what. I've asked our ped. about it and several times have been told

that for our son it doesn't appear to be an issue. I think for some

babies their suture lines are more prominent. You really can't see

it but you can feel it.

Hi Colleen,

What you describe is exactly what has on her head. I honestly think it is from the same reason you just stated. It is right along the edge of the Doc band opening.

How long has your daughter been our of the band? CT told us that it might be less obvious once her skull hardens. The stress just never ends. Can you see your daughter's ridge or is it more that you can feel it?

Thanks, Dawn

Hi Dawn,

My daughter exited her band last April. So it's been about 9 months. She was almost 18 months old at that time (she had two bands). She's 26 months now, so her skull has fused completely... and it's still there. I could see it at first if I really looked for it (because her hair was quite thin back then as it was growing in), especially when she had her hair wet in the tub. But now, you can't see it at all because she has so much hair. If you really look closely during bathtime and her hair is wet and parted a certain way, you can see it. More than anything, I can just feel it, like when I do her hair in the morning.

It bugs me and I stressed a lot about it originally (I really didn't buy that whole, "it's soft tissue, it will go down" explanation). I was complaining about it before she finished her band, and they didn't make adjustments to help it... they just kept saying it feels like bone but it's really soft tissue or fluid. It seemed clear as day to me based on its location and shape that it was her skull plate raised up at that suture, from the adjacent skull plate being held down. It's not rocket science or anything LOL.

How old is your daughter? If she's younger, she might have more time for it to even out, my daughter was already 18 months old, when most sutures are already fused.

My daughter Jenna wore a StARband. When she graduated she had a bump on the top of her head by the opening. I don't know if this is the same as your daughters. but within a month or so it went away.

Weird! My son has this ridge too and he hasn't been banded yet. I've

been told it's everything from unrelated to his plagio (don't buy that

one!), to it's just a hard suture, to it's caused by one plate pushing

up over the other and that it may or may not stay that way. No one

seems to be able to give me a clear answer. I'm planning to ask for a

referral to a craniofacial specialist at Logan's 6 mos. Dr. visit to

try to get a better answer about this.

Please keep us posted on what you find out. I have stated my son had

the ridge at birth along with the plagio but at about 3 months it

seemed to disappear and the plagio seemed to get worse. The doctor

caught the plagio at our 1 week visit but never mentioned the ridge

and then it disappeared and I just thought it was because he was so

cramped at birth then grew so fast that it just adjusted to where it

was suppose to be. I would like to know what it really was.

I think people are talking about a few different

issues and different types of ridges.  I am not an expert (or even close!) but

here is what I know:

-

--Lots

of babies have pronounced ridges at birth because of the compression of going

through the birth canal – usually those ridges resolve themselves within

the first few weeks.

-

sometimes

an ill-fitting helmet can cause a baby’s head to grow up into the

available space, causing a bump up where the helmet stopped

-

or

babies or toddlers can have a ridge caused by premature fusing of the sutures.

depending on which suture and when it occurs, this can be no problem at all or

it can be a sign of craniosyntosis, which causes pressure on the brain requires

surgery.  My understanding is that craniosyntosis is usually diagnosed within

the first two months of life.

-

also,

some babies just have little bumps and ridges on their heads which are just

part of who they are.  Look around at bald adult head and you will see a lot of

variation and not so many perfect heads.

Probably lots of other reasons too, I am

definitely not an expert.  My 2 year old has a ridge on her head caused by

premature fusing of one of her sutures but the neurosurgeon said it is of

absolutely no concern.  It feels prominent to me when I feel her head or comb

her hair, but no one else would ever notice it.  And the neurosurgeon also said

it will settle and become less pronounce over (a long) time.
