Dear Lovette,

I had a terrible reaction to Rochepin about the 4th week. It felt

like I was

being stung by thousands of bees! I stuck with it for a few days cause I

thought

it was a herx. You know the lengths we are willing to go to get better. My doc

waited a week, and tried Clafron for another two weeks and it was fine.

He was hesitant to do that since both are in the same family but I

swear it

was OK. I just used it again and it was fine. It seems to me that it gave me

my

mind (somewhat) back.

Hope this helps. Let us know how it goes.

Well, I'm depressed again. My 13 year old son, on his 10th day of IV

Rocephin, got an allergic reaction, and all treatment has stopped. This

is so TOTALLY UNFAIR!!! He was starting to get his concentration back

and the fog was lifting!! Now, they're going to switch him to IV

Zithromax, but I don't think that's as good for the problems he has.

I'm almost tempted to try the Rocephin again in a week, but I know I

can't put him at risk. Life sucks!!

Dear Marta: He got a rash all over, even on his feet, and he said he

had trouble breathing when he stood up. By the way, let me also

compliment you on this list. There have been many days when the only

thing that pulled me through was the comments by people on this list.

You are wonderful!

Thanks Lovette for the kind words and everyone else too, but YOU guys are

the List, each and every one of us. I never got a rash like that when I was

on Rocephin, maybe others will write to say if they have or know of someone

who had. I think the IV Zith he will get should be helpful. Here's hoping

that he can handle that one ok.

Hugs,

I had the allergic reaction from Hell after 14 days on IV Rocephin, 2 grams

daily. I broke out in a rash and then the itching started. I was begging

my husband to scratch me with sandpaper .... anything. He took me to the ER

and I got a few shots, which did nothing. We went back to the ER about

three hours later and this time I got more shots and some pills. (Have no

idea what it was.) But it didn't help. I had no sleep that night,

obviously.

We weren't entirely sure it was the rocephin until the next morning when I

went to the hospital for my daily dose. The nurse started the drip and it

wasn't five seconds and I could feel it start to itch INSIDE the vein. My

doctor happened to be walking by and I told him what it was doing. He

stopped it immediately and that was that. No more rocephin. The itching

and rash lasted a few more days, but not nearly as intense as it was that

first night. The doc gave me some pretty strong sleeping pills so I could

get some rest. Hang in there!!

I had an allergic reaction to Ceftin. Was so sick with Lyme, I didn't know I

had a reaction. Went to the dr. two week later when I finally got hives. He

said it is a wonder I hadn't died, the hives were all inside my body. So now

I cannot take pennicillin or cephalosporins since they are a generation of

pennicillin. Sure felt better when I quit taking Ceftin,

Hi Roe,

I have exactly the same thing. I'm on recephin now for 7 weeks also. At

first I got itchy while infusing so my dr suggested I take Benadryl 1 hr

before. That seemed to help it so I also took it at night before bed. Then

I slowly stopped taking it, but I notice I get itchy periodically. I'm also

trying to ignore it. Bumps then no bumps. I was wondering the same things.

I went to an allergist before iv to be tested for penicillin and she said I

was negative. About 2 days after the test, I had an itchy rash on my hands.

I don't know if there was any relationship to what was tested or just a

reaction to something I may have touched.

Are your symptoms the same, worse or better at this point. I'm getting

discouraged. I have some good days and some bad. Low grade temperatures

(99.4-99.7) on some days, normal on others. Knee pain, a lymie brain

feeling, sometimes a little queezy in my stomach. I don't know what's going

on at this point. I only have 2 weeks to go. What are your symptoms?

Hi Roe,

I had a reaction the first time I ever got IV Rocephin. They stopped

treatment and sent me to another hospital to try and desensitize me

to

it so I could continue treatment. Strange thing, I didn't react to it

there and never had a problem again. I have a problem with hives with

the lyme itself. I'll break out in scattered hives when I start to

relapse and also with treatment. I do believe this is due strictly to

the lyme. Hives can be a form of the lyme rash and it makes sense

that

if the lyme is acting up the hives come to life. Hives do indicate an

allergic reaction and with lyme, at least in my case, I think it's an

allergic reaction to the bug itself, or at least what that bug causes

my body to do. There was no doubt on my first dose of IV Rocephin

that

it needed to be halted. I broke out all over and had a hard time

breathing. That is a severe reaction. I'm not a doctor but have

played

one with myself often. If you don't want to stop treatment, don't. It

doesn't sound like you are having a reaction to the Rocephin, just

what it's making the bug do. Have some Benadryl handy just in case

because you'll know if you have a major reaction, that way you'll

have

some treatment if needed until you get to the hospital. I really

think

that if it was a reaction to the drug itself there would have been no

doubt that it was the cause and it would have happened almost

immediately. I have the hive problem with my lyme all the time, on

abx

or off!! Don't cheat yourself of good treatment for what sounds like

the same problem. :o)

Carolyn

P.S. I want to say it again, I'm no doc!!!! I've just been through

both major reactions and lyme hives.

has anyone had this problem with antibiotics? Is it safe to

Renie, thanks, for understanding. it sure helps to know i am not alone

in this one. I am finally starting to see improvement after 7 weeks of

total hell. i am having more pain than usual though and in wierd

places and my sleep paterns are going crazy. i slept 16 hours this

weekend and when i woke at 4 pm I felt like i was hit by a truck. i

had terrible pain in my butt cheeks and thighs!! and my knees where

hurting. i have always said, with lyme everyday is a new adventure.

but i am seeing improvement. i can read a little better and although i

only had about 4 hours sleep last night i am not feeling to bad this

morning. I see my doctor tomorrow and am going to ask for another 2

weeks of IV, i know i am still full of buggers and need more treatment.

But i also know getting the insurance company to agree is another

story. But i plan to fight this time and let them know if their lousey

HMO doctor would have listened to me in 1998, instead of pushing me off

as a depressed middle aged woman with a rash, i would not need the damn

iv now. Good luck and it can get better with PROPER treatment, It just

takes time. and it seems the longer you have it the more IV you need

before you see improvement.

Thank you Carolyn, just what i needed to hear. I dont have any

breathing problems and when i talked to my doctor a couple of weeks ago

he said it may be a type of herx reaction. of course he is

speculating, but he let me stay on the abx, his theory was that as the

abx is moving through the bloodstream, it is causing a reation at the

site it is busy killing the bugs. he said it much better then this and

it made sense. I really dont think it is an allergy either, i take

benedryl and it really doesnt help, the day i wrote the letter to the

list it was really bad. i had a friend over and we were watching a

movie and i couldnt stop scratching, it was really embarrassing. that

night i slept 16 hours! its got to be a lyme thing and no way am i

giving up the IV for an itch!

I have been told all my life I am allergic to penicillin. Three years ago I

was tested and sure enough I was. I wear something that says I am allergic to

this - then when I had the Lyme testing they tested for penicillin and it

came out I was no longer allergic. I think that we can become allergic to

things after awhile and then not be. I have tons of allergies and get shots

and carry needles. Hives can be serious if they get into your throat or your

throat closes off the airway. Play it safe - carry benedryl and an epi-pen.

Roseanne,

After a number of weeks on IV Rocephin I started getting an allergic

reaction - not exactly like yours - but very itchy eyes, throat and skin. No

rashes. My doc suggested I take an antihistamine for it which I did. It

helped and then after a couple of weeks I stopped taking the antihistamine

and I no longer had the reaction. I don't know if it's safe for you to

continue but it seems a lot of people have mild allergic reactions that are

handled with antihistamines. I happened to have prescription stuff, Zyrtec

but I think Benadryl works as well, just makes you groggy. It probably

wouldn't hurt to try it. Benadryl, I believe, is pretty light weight stuff.

I'm sure we all know what you mean when you don't want to talk to the doc

about it. There were many things I avoided mentioning to my doc which is too

bad because then he doesn't get to learn about some of the less known

effects of the disease and treatment.

Good luck,

beth (SF)

Yes its scary. When I first started to have these reactions, I took

antihistamine. That landed me in the Washington Hospital (DC):

anaphylactic

Is'nt it something to get the worse allergic reaction from an antiallergic

When I have allergies like now, its like my body is going haywire!!!

Hi Francine,

I've had this reaction before. Sometimes it comes as a very delayed

reaction to food, sometimes to inhaled allergens or very strong chemical

smells. Because of this particular reaction, I carry Benedryl with me

everywhere I go. I only get the racing heartbeat two or three times a

year, but it can be very scary if you're alone or driving a car. Often my

heartbeat will return to normal on its own in a few minutes, but two or

three times, the reaction lasted much longer. The anti-histamine will end

the attack very quickly.

Boy! I thought that AS was caused by bees and peanut butter. I had no idea

anti-histamines could cause it too.

Thanks Barbara. I some people with candidiasis, one of the symptoms is

multiple food and chemical sensitivities. You become allergic to a wide number

of

foods and substances that normally do not bother people. And the most extreme

form of allergic reaction is AS.

If you do not have multiple foood and chemical sensitivities, antihistamines

should be safe.

I have been taking benadryl twice a day for several days - trying to clear up a problem with my expander (breast cancer). I work up Saturday with an allergic reaction. Wondering if it could be with Low Dose Naltrexone (3 mg) to the benadryl. Has anyone else had this problems?
