Couple Questions - Asymmetry

My son just got the band on Monday and I have a few questions you may be able to give me some insight on. 1. How does the band correct asymmetry in the ears and eyes. My son has some eye and ear asymmetry. Sounds like most people saw a positive correction in asymmetry. Anyone have beginning and ending measurements of how much it improved? 2. Where is the band supposed to rest on the child's forehead? On the eyebrows, above the eyebrows? 3. My son also has some bossing on the right side. I know that they hold in this area but does this become less noticable as the head corrects? 4. How long did it take before you started seeing correction? My son is 7.5 months old born 5 weeks early so cranial technologies is going by 6.25 months old. I don't know if that really makes a difference or not. I am so excited to see some

correction. I'm sure it takes at least 3 weeks to a month to see any real changes and also it depends on how much he grows but I was just curious what others have experienced. Thanks so much. Sybil

Hi Sybil-

As the flat areas pop out, they should pull the eyes and ears with

them. So for my son, who has a flat spot on the back right and left

front of his head, as those areas pop out, the ears should shift in

place (the one on the right that's forward, should come back, or at

least appear to be moved back, and the one on the left should pull

forward as the front left flat spot pops out). The same with the

eyes. My son's left eye is " lazy " looking, but as his left forehead

pops out, it should raise his eyebrow and make him look a little

more wide-eyed.

My son's band sits on his eyebrows, to the point that you can't see

them, and the therapist advised that that's normal.

My son has a great deal of bossing on his right side and that spot

is being held in place by the band. The left side is open on top and

is where the foam is scraped out to encourage that side to pop out.

Once it begins to pop out, it will become more balanced with the

right side.

We saw a tiny spot pop out after just one week, and my son was 17

months old, so you should see improvement really soon with your

son's age. Don't expect it all to just shift into place over night.

I could feel it on my son's head more than I could see it. The edges

of his flat spot are popping out before the whole center does, so

first we noticed it around the bottom edge, and now I can feel it's

popping out around the top edge as well. Again, he's older, but I

would think it works kind of the same with younger babies.

Hope that helps!

Hi Sybil!

1. My dd wore a Hanger band - and we saw correction in her forehead, eye and ear asym. I don't have my #'s but I knew just by looking at her that it was better.

2. Depending on how the band is cut... I've seen some that go straight across and that would be just at or above the eyebrows... and I've seen some that have a little dip down in the center of the eyebrows... speak to your ortho about it.

3. Bossing will besome less noticable... as the skull is coaxed into a round shape, the forhead will move back and the back of the head fills out.

4. Time is totally dependant on growth. We didn't see any for awhile... and then one day it was like WHOA! and then very next week she needed a MAJOR shaving down. Just be consistant in wearing the band - you never know when a spurt will hit! My dd wore 2 bands over 6 months time.

Thanks so much for your insight! I appreciate it. I am going to try to go in today or tomorrow for an adjustment because the band is slumping on one side causing my son's eye to look smushed. I called and they said it was OK but that they would adjust it when he comes in so hopefully that will be resolved. Thanks again.JenandLuli@... wrote: Hi Sybil!1. Thanks. Sounds like our babies heads are almost exactly the same. Back right, Front left side are flattened. It's amazing how this all works. Did you ever have a problem with the band squashing one eye (left eye) ever. We just got the band and his left eye always looks a little squashed. The clinician is going to check it out tomorrow at his appointment and hopefully make an adjustment. Other than that, the band fits great! Thanks again for your input, it makes me feel hopeful.
