Guest guest
Well, My mom told me that a single colonoscopy is nothing compared to the colon surgeries and other probes up her butt she had to have after being diagnosed with the colon cancer. I guess the other alternative is taking the chance that you won't get it.Who's never won? Biggest Grammy Award surprises of all time on AOL Music. Guest guest
My 19-year-old son recently had a capsule endoscopy at the University of CA at Irvine. He's autistic, and there's no way I could have gotten him to drink the Go-Lytely, much less be semi-awake and cooperative during a colonoscopy. The only prep he required was fasting 24 hours. (Although they would have PREFERRED he drink the salt water.) The gastroenterologist said the capsule procedure is primarily used to visualize the small intestine. In my son's case, they were looking for signs of Crohn's. I have my own horror story involving a doctor who later lost his license for the way her did colonoscopies on women. He kept the " feel-good " drugs for himself, performed full colonoscopies without anesthetic, then falsified the patients' medical records to indicate he'd give them intervenous pain medication, but they hadn't responded to it. I had two babies naturally, but that colonoscopy far far exceeded the pain of childbirth. I'm surprised they didn't hear me screaming all the way into the street. This was 17 years ago. After this experience, I will NEVER have a colonoscopy again. I've made subsequent appointments for the procedure, but I can't force myself show up. One therapist told me I have PTSD. Maybe I should have sued the gastro, but I couldn't even talk about it for a year. If I get cancer, so be it, but I've had IBS for 23 years and it hasn't killed me yet! Guest guest
How horrible that must have been. I'm behind in reading. What did they find with your colonoscopy? Did I miss the findings? Sherri -------------- Original message -------------- <<I wasn't out during mine. They numbed me, but I was awake. ..They wanted me to look at the screen while the did it.I know one thing for sure, if I was a doctor, I would not want to be a doctor that looks up peoples butts!>> Agreed. How does someone decide that's what they want to do for a living? Must pay a lot. Yeah, if I was numb, it wouldn't have been a big deal. But they used a standard sized scope when they should have used a pediatric one and then with the right angles that were swollen...they said when they were maneuvering around those tight kinks with their scope that was too large and stretching me out was when I would cry out the most. It was as excruciating as labor--level 10 pain. And I was ignored because that's standard procedure. Becky Be a better friend, newshound, and know-it-all with Yahoo! Mobile. Try it now. Guest guest
The problem with virtual colonoscopy-the one that is the pill that is talking about or colonography (where they use the CT Scan to take a picture of the colon without being invasive) is that if they find something wrong they still have to do a traditional colonoscopy. Guest guest
Zig, Doctors have tried to get my mother to do a colonoscopy (she's 72 now but to look at her you would never know it) and she came close a couple times but won't do it. I don't blame her for it. Eleven and 12 years ago when I started having different symptoms (several of which later ended up being part of endometriosis) I went to a GI doctor to find out why I was so constipated and they wanted me to have a lower GI test along with flexible sigmoidoscopy. I almost went thru the test but just couldn't bring myself to do it because of the fact that I felt that area was too private for them to touch so I cancelled the test. I later got a letter from that doctor explaining why they wanted to do the test to check for polyps and such but I just couldn't do it. Then when the other issues occurred (by now I knew I had IBS and some of the doctors thought that this was all related to my IBS when the other symptoms I then ended up having turned out to be endometriosis related) because some of the doctors thought it was my IBS and I knew better I refused to go thru the test. This time it was because I knew my pain was in my female organs and with my pain threshold as it was I knew that there was no way I was letting that scope go up me. I told my mom that if at a later date something really shows with my bowel that something more than IBS is going on with my bowel or even a hemorrhoid (which I have and am going to try again to deal with myself before going to a GI doctor or proctologist about it) then I will go ahead and have the tests. With all my mess now I don't feel as intimidated by the issue of too private. But I'm going to hold that off as long as possible if I can help it. Guest guest
It's out now. It's called a camera capsule. It takes pictures as it travels down your intestinal track to you colon. Sherri -------------- Original message -------------- From: blueeberri@... They are supposed to come out with a pill you can swallow then poop out. It checks out your intestinal track and colon as it travels down....Now that would be my choice over a colonscopy.BUT whatever you do PLEASE KEEP HAVING ONE. My mom was diagnosed with colon cancer last year at age 63. She now has to wear a bag the rest of her life. Start the year off right. Easy ways to stay in shape in the new year.
