I'm writing from Louisiana, but I read 's List because you all often discuss issues that go beyond the borders of Broward and Florida. Thanks for all the info., everyone! This news item was recently posted on a list for Louisiana families that I also subscribe to. Check out what some parents did to bring change in Minnesota:http://education.state.mn.us/MDE/About_MDE/News_Center/Press_Releases/018766 From the article:"The Minnesota Supreme Court upheld a Minnesota Department of Educationdecision that special education services must be provided to students forextracurricular and non-academic activities, regardless of whether theactivity was required for the education of the student. The decision stemmedfrom a complaint filed by the parents of a fifth grader in the CentennialSchool District who requested the special education team determine theneeded supplementary services to play volleyball and participate inafter-school clubs."This is just a brief news release, so it doesn't provide much detail. It mentions school sports teams and other after-school clubs or activities. I suppose the schools could say that aftercare is a whole different thing than sports or elective activities, and the school therefore wouldn't have to provide service to special needs kids, but this ruling by the MN Supreme Court is encouraging.
