Guest guest
Carol About 25%-33% of our kids have seizures. The seizures may be tiny ones that go unnoticed (petit mals), weird motor tics (partial complex), behavioral ones (temporal lobe epilepsy) or sleep seizures (some kids fall out of bed or have bruises in the morning, or may wet the bed, but not all). If your son experienced any of these, they can transform type as he gets older to frank everybody-can-recognize-this-seizures (grand mal). I understand the trauma of " not another thing " but this is not another thing. It is more of the same thing. You just weren't aware of it. I am sorry for your pain. There are things that can help reduce the frequency (an osteopath for cranial, biomedical support such as omega 3's and magnesium, etc) but the fact is our kids get seizures, and he may have been having them sooner in another form or sometimes they develop them later. Obviously, your son needs a workup because they are late onset, so you need to find out that it is not something else (an old scar, infection, other disease) but chances are it is due to the autism. My kid's neurologist did a 5 day inpatient EEG on him at age 14, told me it was normal and his " seizures " were not real. When he turned 18, I got a copy of the formal report. He had seizures during the admission both sleeping and waking, and at the time he was on anticonvulsants. The neuro lied to me. Now, at 19, he is having seizures that produce hallucinations of bodily harm. In fact, the only way we know they *are* seizures and not a psychotic thing is that antipsychotics don't fix it, Valium does--which treats seizures. I am sorry for your pain. > Does anyone have experience with our young experiencing SEIZURES > beginning at age 24? Guest guest
My son's neurologist once told me that most children w/ autism experiece periodic very minor seizures. Is it possible that something triggered more severe seizures? i.e. - an increased use of his computer to play games (flat screen monitor), seeing more 3D movies than normal or other new activity. Our neurologist has mentioned that these can cause seizures in some people. Has he been taking any new medications? My son suffered some seizures when he took Strattera and we took him off of it right away. If you have a doctor you trust, ask them what tests they plan to do, to find out what is causing this. I know new problems with our kids can add to our stress. My son recently developed diabetes, and the doctor indicated it was possibly because he was on Risperdol, so we dropped another medication and are dealing with insulin injectios. Parents of autistic kids are by nature strong people. We have to " roll with the punches " and do the best we can to take care of our kids and give them the best lives we can. I hope you will press your doctor to find out what caused the seizures. Good Luck. Glenda > > Does anyone have experience with our young experiencing SEIZURES beginning at age 24? Guest guest
Well i have had my experiences with seizures with my son he had his 1st @ age 8yrs old they use to be really bad (Grand Mal)but then once we had the right meds they were under control but last year May when we changed his meds he had a really big one and fell and crack his head open ( no worries he did no damage to his skull) if you would have seen his fall and the damage he did to the floor ( which he broke the concrete floor) and the amount of blood that was lost trust me you would have thought it would have been tragic or the end for him but well now he's doing much better the new meds that they had changed him on around the time of the fall is doing well at the time of his fall he had just started the new med which is called Banzel so they weren't fully in his system yet so he's been ok now we were able to know when his seizures where coming but just recently they added"Vimpat" a brand new med on the market you are suppose to add it to your other meds and its suppose to stop seizures by 50% or more so far he's been ok on it and its almost the end of the month so far no seizures i have read all the reviews on this med and all the feedback i saw look very promising but you know what works for one don't work the same for everyone so now we have this new med along with his Banzel,Topamax, and Depakene the doctor said if he's seizures free this month coming he will be weaned off the Topamax so i have everything crossed and praying for that Oh another thing to you may want to have your doc to get you a strip for Diastat or Epi pen its the same stuff they give you via IV to stop seizures at the hospital trust me it saves you a trip to the ER because that day when my son had that major seizure last year May with all the blood and stuff it was really bad like something you see in a horror movie with all the blood every where but once i inserted that Diastat it help even the paramedics and his docs said that saved his life just to think if i didn't have it my wouldn't be with us today...god is good i hope this info was helpful for you good luck with every thing and please feel free to contact me if you need any questions or anything on seizures i have been dealing with them for a while and my son has been on every seizure med known to man before they founded the right ones to help. Good luck Tracie S. trayseaiii@...
