Guest guest
My almost 9 month old son is getting banded on Friday at Cranial Technologies in Pasadena, CA. This all happened very fast (my pediatrician completely missed it and it was caught by her partner when on call). I have done some research on the banding process but still need advice/help from moms who have been through this before (not doctors like my pediatrician who say, oh it's no big deal, the baby will adjust fine) I'm so worried about him being incredibly hot (he runs hot anyway) and just generally uncomfortable. He's also teething so is crankier than usual and not sleeping well. Any advice you have for me on the topics below (or any others I should know about ) is MUCH APPRECIATED!! Thank you in advance for any advice you can offer. - Any tips for the first day/first night and getting them adjusted? - how do you keep them cool? Do you keep them inside or take them to the mall? It's been in the 90s where i live and I can't imagine being out in that with a band on -do you have to wear button down shirts only? I only have one and am hoping i can stretch his existing shirts over the band -any advice re: what people will say? I feel like they will assume I am a bad parent and dropped him on his head or they will think he's brain damaged. I know that part is more about me since he is still too young to know the difference but i know people will question why he has the band on. -Anything else I haven't thought of yet? Any help/advice is much appreciated.
Guest guest
Welcome! It's great that the second doctor caught it before it was too late to do anything about it. I'm sure he'll do just fine in it, if not right off the bat, then soon after. It really is a lot harder on the parents than the child. Teething won't help, but other moms have been through teething with the helmet and have lived to tell the tale, so hopefully it won't be too bad for you. My advice for the first day is to not let your son know you're stressed or upset, so even if you have to fake it like a movie star, act happy and excited when he gets his band on for the first time. That way, he feeds off your excitement and not your stress. My son fussed for about 5 seconds when they first put it on and was fine after. Also, practice taking the helmet off and putting it back on when you're in the office, so that you can get comfortable with the right way to do it. Often the taking it off and on part is what upsets them the most at the beginning. If it's already in the 90s out there, I would definitely only dress him in a onesie and nothing else, until his body temp adjusts. My son sweat pretty bad for the 1st 3 or 4 days, and then it gradually got better and after a week he was fine. We have had some hot days here too recently (we're in NC) and he did get sweaty again, but we were still out at the park and outside and he didn't seem uncomfortable at all. So there's no need to keep him inside all the time, but I know for me, I don't even like to be out in the heat all that much, so whatever you feel comfortable with. You can also take the band off periodically to wipe it and his head dry with a towel, then put it back on. You don't have to buy all button down shirts. You can take the band off for a couple of minutes each morning to get him dressed, then put it right back on. I know baby clothes do have a lot of zippers and buttons on the shoulder that might make it possible to leave the band on, but my son is older (19m) and most of his clothes are just 3T t-shirts and I have to take his band off to get them on. It's 2 minutes, max. It will be weird going out in public the first time, but it does get easier. Pretty soon you don't even think about it and when someone does ask you a question about it, it will be like, " what? oh right, he has a helmet on, I totally forgot. " People will stare and maybe ask some strange questions, but just tell them that he has a severe flat spot (whether it is or not, it's just easier for them to understand) and it's to reshape his head and be done with it. I haven't run into any rude people along the way, so I hope you don't either. Hope that helps! Good luck on Friday! Please keep us posted! Guest guest
We got Target 1 1/2 inch foam to put over our mattress to make it more comfortable for my son. He slept great from night one onward. ( I also have a vsense breathing monitor under the mattress so I was not so worried about it being softer, if he couldnt breath the monitor would go off) Alot of moms do get the foam and cut it to fit both the crib and the pack and play or any place the babe naps. I would remain positive buy some cortizone cream incase of mild heat rash on the head. (we used less than 1 % cream because my son was 4 months when we first banded. I would dress him a bit lighter but dont go nuts until you see how he does. Just pop it on his head and go for it! Good luck and keep us updated. Tammy mom to graduated on 12/31/07 banded 10/31/07. Guest guest
Hi ! My 9 month old daughter got her helmet last Thursday and she's doing awesome with it! Funny because my pediatrician sounds like yours except she kept telling me that her head was fine. Her opthamologist finally had to tell her to get me a referral because of her facial asymmetry. Anyways, here are my answers to your questions... The first few days she only wore it a few hours at a time to get used to it. It did seem like the only time she noticed it and got mad was when I took it on and off. Like Tammy suggested, practice taking it on and off before you leave. I didn't do that so I'm still trying to figure out the easiest way! I plan on taking my daughter outside as much as I would normally. Since she is still young I'm going to keep her in the shade to protect her virgin skin so I'm sure that will help keep her a little cooler. We don't have air-conditioning so inside is just as bad as outside! LOL I have just been taking her helmet off to get her dressed. There is no way I'm going to buy a new wardrobe! I haven't had anyone ask me yet why she's wearing it. Not even my neighbors!! They have all just ignored it, which is fine with me! I did have one boy at Wal-Mart (he had Downs Syndrome) start yelling at the top of his lungs " BABY HAS A HELMET!! " over and over again! LOL It was mortifying but now I won't be embarrased because he set the bar so high! LOL Just hold your head high and smile like your baby is no different then any other baby. Good luck and just remember what a beautiful head he'll have in a few months!! Bree > > My almost 9 month old son is getting banded on Friday at Cranial Technologies in Pasadena, > CA. Guest guest
How wonderful that the ped caught it and was so proactive in treating! That is not always the case.. alot of parents need to fight to get treated! As far as how your sone will adjust... My dd wore a band in the San Valley from June thru Dec... and it was HOT!!! We dressed her very loosly - just a shirt and diaper sometimes... she didn't wear the band if we were outside for a long period of time (like my sons little league game) but we kept all that to a minimim because we wanted the best correction possible. Also we purchased a battery powered little fan for her to keep a breeze on her. Also, if the car had been sitting in the sun and was hot inside we would take off the band so she wouldn't get overheated. We have central air so at night she wore light jammies... s in Canoga Park on Victory and Canoga has GREAT light jammies for really cheap ($5-$7) If people look I ignore them, If people ask I give a simple "her head isnot round and this is helping to round it out... It's called Plagiocephaly" If they ask more I'll answer their questions. I used as my opportunity to inform the public. Kids always liked to touch the band and I would ask them "Do you like her hat?" I know it can feel very overwhelming and daunting in the beginning... but I promise after you get the band and it's been a few weeks, you'll think your baby look naked with out it! Guest guest
Babies do adjust very well, and we parents do okay too :-) My daugher wore a starband from age 5 to 10 mo for brachy (flat in back). She did great. She wore it in the summer too (but we were close to SF). We dressed her lightly with no socks. Ran the A/C before putting her in the car. Kept her out of the sun... It takes about a week or so for their body to adjust to the temp, but most babies do very well. My daughter has always been a happy baby, but not a great sleeper. That stayed the same in her band. We coslept and it worked well for us. Most people were very nice about Sydney's band, and none accused us of dropping her. Although like most parents I felt guilty about not preventing her flat head. I asked our ped about it at 2 mo and she said " don't worry " . At four months she said " that looks pretty bad " - ugh. Does your baby have torticollis (tort) - this is limited range of motion in the neck. It causes baby to prefer to look one way, lay on one side... and contributes to plagio. If tort is present you'll need stretches/PT to resolve it. Good luck with everything. -christine sydney 2 yrs starband grad > > My almost 9 month old son is getting banded on Friday at Cranial Technologies in Pasadena, > CA. Guest guest
I'm sure your baby will adjust just fine. My son adjusted to it very quickly. He was sleeping in it all night the first day we got it. As for clothes, you can stretch most things over the band but when you can't I usually just take off the band, put his shirt on and put the band back on. It's OK to do this. At first it will be a little difficult because you won't be used to it but after a little time it becomes second nature putting the band on and off. As for other people's reactions, most people are just curious about what it is and that is why they look or ask questions. I usually give them the short answer, he has a flat spot on his head and this will make it round out. I also usually add that there is nothing wrong with him so they are not worried because most people are concerned. It will be OK. The first time out is the hardest so I suggest you go food shopping or to the mall where you can get used to being around lots of people with him. After that, it will be no big deal and I found I forget he is even wearing it and that is when you stop worrying about the other people. Kids are sometimes the most blunt because kids are so honest so it is funny to hear what they say to there parents when they see the band. Some say, what's wrong with his head. One girl came up to me and said, I hope his brain gets better soon. I thought that was adorable. Anyways, I hope this helped a little. Good luck, it will work out fine. I am so glad I banded my son, I can really see results and am happy with it. Guest guest
Cranial Tech is awesome! We went to the one in Phx, AZ. You will be amazed with the results. > 1. Our son was 7.5 months when he started. During the day there was no adjustment for him...he just took right to the band. The first 2 nights were rough...we tried different combinations of jammies and house temperatures until we found what worked. By the 3rd night he was back to sleeping through the night. My son never had an issue with teething but my nephew did...The teething tablets helped him tremendously...maybe worth a try if you haven't already. 2. Wipe sweat periodically with a dry washcloth throughout the day. Use a Cold Seat or Babydagny.com has carseat chillers. Cool the car off prior to getting in (if possible). Dress your child lightly. I live in Phx. so we are typically inside during the summer or in the pool...you can take the band off but you want to not exceed an hour out of it a day. You could hang-out at the mall some. 3. You can take the band off to get your child dressed and undressed. If you need to do stretches then you'll also need to take the band off for that. There was NO way that I could stretch shirts over my son's band. It was hard enough getting shirts over just his head (big head)! 4. I would answer peoples questions. Nobody ever said anything rude to us. People would say things like oh I wish I knew about that with my son, daughter, etc. or that they knew someone that wore one or just curious questions. You can tell them as much or as little as you want. If some one thinks that you are a bad parent or that he is brain damaged that is their problem and you know you aren't those things so don't worry. 5. Decorate the band and make it cute! Stickers work well to achieve this task. Your little one will look just as cute in the band as he does out. 22 month old DOC grad
Guest guest
Ditto the "naked without it". My son is on week 5, this weekend, and I forget what he looks like without it until we take it off, and we are always in a hurry to put it back on. My son sweats a lot too, we rinse his head daily and clean the helmet with alcohol wipes. I have gotten use to it all, which I thought would NEVER happen. And as soon as you see some results, you will be so excited and so happy that you did this. We are seeing great results at 5 weeks and hoping for another growth spurt here real soon. Guest guest
My son just began his band last week and he turns 1 in two weeks!! My pediatrician kind of missed it too, we often brought it up but he would say " let's see if it rounds out " and we went with that because we really didn't want to do the helmet. Finally, we decided it is now or never and began the process. I can't tell you how worried I was because my son is so much older and is an extremely obstinant baby. It's his way or the highway. But, you know what? He is doing okay. When we first put the helmet on in the doctor's office he screamed and wailed and I thought " Boy am I in for a long road " , but the next day when we began the adjustment period, he was fine. We put the helmet on him and he just accepted the fact that he was wearing it. I am having a harder time adjusting than him because I just feel like it looks so uncomfortable, especially when he is sleeping. Just think of it this way, this will be a few months of your family's life that will benefit your child for his whole life. Relax, it will be okay. I am still telling myself this... And don't worry about other people. I have brought him out a few times and yea people stare, but you know what? Who cares! All that matters is that you love your son and you are doing what is best for him!
