Guest guest
let me tell you all something that might make you give up your diet coke i drank that since it came out and before that other diet sodas.. i was up to four or five a day .. my dad had been nagging my my whole life that aspartame is not good for you . he is a chemical engineer and participated in the testing and manufacture of the substance ..he also does a great deal of research into nutrition.. artificial sweetners especially aspartame can fool the body into thinking they are sugar and can actually produce an insulin response and can cause you to gain weight. when i think back i did not have a weight problem until i started drinking diet soda.. so making my mind think of all the bad things those chemicals were doing to my body i was finally able to give it up.i had spent years saying its my only vice .and rationalizing it that way ..it was not easy but. all i drink now is water, tea and decaf coffee and once in a while i will have a diet soda for a treat catherine -----
Guest guest
I hear ya, . All I drink is water, too, and very occasionally I will have a bottled crystal light or crystal bay... like one or two per month! In fact, I was at a church luncheon at someone's home last Sunday and the ONLY thing she had out to drink was lemonade (sugar sweetened, of course). I asked for a simple glass of water and folks looked at me like I was asking for hard-liquor or something! LOL Well, you know how I just don't care what people think or say about my WOE... I just smiled sweetly and waited for that glass of water :-) :-) :-) -Marlena > >all i drink now is water, >tea and decaf coffee and once in a while i will have a diet soda for a >treat >catherine >----- > _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp
Guest guest
Marlena.... What a wonderful report. In my life I have made many bad decisions, simply because I didn't have the nerve to stand up for what was good for me. Your sharing makes it easier for all of us. /mike/ Re: introduction >I asked for a simple glass of water and folks looked at me like I > was asking for hard-liquor or something! I'm in the washington chorus (yes, Marlena, I'm practically a neighbor!) and at every rehearsal we have a breaktime, and at that breaktime they serve lemonade and a bunch of high-carb snacks (though occasionally they have cheese & crackers) I ask for water and they're like, well, here's a cup, you can get some from the sink over there... nasty tap water that tastes like old pipes & chlorine, blech! And I'm always forgetting to bring my own, dang. Now, after an hour and a half of singing and before another hour of it, lemonade sounds soooooo good... maybe I'll get some of that new lemonade mix that I read about in the Atkins magazine-- has anyone tried it? BTW, if any of y'all are interested, we did a benefit " Concert For America " at the Kennedy Center in DC on Monday, and it's playing tonight at 9pm EST on PBS; I think it might be delayed for pacific/mountain, check listings. Was a great concert, included Chapin Carpenter and Sir Galway and many others... the combined voices of the 3 major choirs in DC did Mahler's 2nd Symphony finale. --jen
Guest guest
Hi , Sounds like you are on the right track. Keep up the good work and stick to this WOE, it really does work. Working out is great way to help the weight loss. If you start to lift weights, you might see a increase in muscle mass. With all the protein you are eating, it helps build muscle and more muscle burns more fat. Nice to meet you and looking forward to hearing about your progress. 155/151/

Guest guest
and others, It's nice to meet all of you too. By the way, what do the three numbers mean at the bottom of many of your notes? I'm guessing it's start/current/goal. Is that correct? > Hi , > Sounds like you are on the right track. Guest guest
Hi , You are just down the road from me. I have a dear friend in Angleton who is a breast cancer survivor and probably has some Thyroid issues now. I go to a FP doctor in Sugarland Family Practice, Her name is Dr Cantu. I just pay my co-pay but I think if she is not on insurance it is probably about $35-$40 for the visit. Labs are a different story. They have a lab (Quest Diagnostics) in there. They bill you separatly. Probably a couble of hundred w/o insurance. Thanks for your welcome! Guest guest
Hi Elloise, A very warm welcome to you! I am glad you found your way here. I also had to have two biopsies the first in 87 and the second in 97. I know how hard it is to wait for the results of a biopsy. I pray all goes well on Tuesday. Guest guest
Hi Elloise, Welcome to the group, I'm glad you found us. Good luck with the second biopsy and I hope your new doctor has some insights for you regarding your rise in numbers once it's complete. I've been on steroid therapy since Sept '03....don't let that scare you, most people are on and then off within 6-8 months. I was diagnosed with the aggressive form of IgAN going from normal labs to roughly 35% function in less than 6 months. My biopsy showed so much damage, 80% scarring and crescents, that some of my nephs associates felt I was untreatable. My neph figured we had nothing to lose and perhaps time to gain by trying a course of steroids. So far it has kept me stable for 21 months, though my IgA has become steroid dependent so I am currently unable to wean off them completely....this is a rare occurrence though so don't freak out about that part. Steroid therapy can do wonderful things but you truly have to weigh the risks and side effects of the steroids with what they will do for your disease. If you are spilling high amounts of protein 3+g/24hrs then the benefits of brining that under control are worth doing the steroids, if your function is near normal and you don't have a high protein spill then the biopsy might show some other reasoning to try a course of steroid treatment. Ask your neph what he is looking to get out of the steroids and then ask about a timeline for dosing and weaning off them. They are not fun drugs to be on, but enough of us here have been there so we can and will help you thru it. I'm also on Lisinopril, fish oil, calcium tabs, and acidophilus to keep the stomach damage from the prednisone down to a minimum. Our sister site, as you've found, is a great place to send family so they can learn about this disease from a patients point of view. Our founder Pierre has done a wonderful job with it. Welcome again, Amy G. Introduction Hello everyone - I just wanted to post a quick introduction. I've been reading about all of you and thought it rude to not say hello. I was diagnosed with IGAN in 2001 after a kidney biopsy. Doctors said chances were I had had it much longer, but that it seemed I was being treated for individual symptons instead of anyone looking at me as a whole. (sudden high blood pressure, swelling in the legs and ankles, extreme headaches and fatigue) At that time I was started on Lisinopril, Lipitor, and fish oil. Since then we have added Lasix to the list along with Potassium. Diagnosis was we seemed to have caught it early and vist every six months. Well, went to the doc on Monday and it seems that all the levels that had been stable every six months have decided to increase this last set of labs. It's a new doc so we spent a lot of time going over past labs and history. He wants to do another biopsy to see what the damage difference is between 2001 and now and if we need to add steroid treatment or something else. I found this group via the website Pierre has on IGAN - a lot of good information and I've sent the link to my family. They are all in the first few stages of acceptance (anger, denial, etc). I've come to accept what's going on and as long as the doc hasn't said dialysis I'm okay with this. With that said, however, I am a bit nervious about this second biopsy (scheduled for Tuesday) and it's results. I'm really happy to have found a group of people who are in the same " boat " and I can talk about this without having to explain everything we know or don't know about IGAN. I look forward to getting to know you all better. Guest guest
Amy, Welcome to the group. It is a great group of people. Warm and supportive. All communication modalities are used by the people in this group. Some are oral, some sign, some are aided, some are implanted with CIs. Our son is oral simply because he was born hearing. But now that he is older and interested, we are learning ASL as a family. The general idea for this list is that there is no one right choice for all D/HIOH kids. We make our choices based on what our kids need. Everyone is different, even when there are similarities. And the people here help support those choices, help each other find resources ... and share stories about parenting our kids. I am Jill, mother of 2. I work from home in my studio that currently has more roller blades and hooded sweatshirts than artwork strewn about. My older child is Ian, 15, and a high school sophomore, mainstreamed in our local district. (Where did the years go?!) He has a progressive (degenerative) bilateral conductive moderate loss. He is aided, uses a personal FM system at school and has the service of a TOD (teacher of the deaf). A TOD can also be called a HI (hearing itinerant) or HIRS (hearing impaired related services). We learned of Ian's hearing loss when he was in second grade -- when he was about 7½. My other child is , 11, and while she has normal hearing, we have an official diagnosis of selective hearing for her. When she seemed to not be hearing us, we took her to the audiologist. I figured if I had one child with a loss, I might have two. The audiologist gave her the full booth test routine and then laughing informed me that we now had his first official diagnosis of " selective hearing " but he doubted that the school would take it seriously. (grin) I did not have any luck getting our insurance company to pay for Ian's aids the first time around, but now that we have gotten to our second set of aids, I am going to give it more of a try. I doubt it will work, but it's certainly worth the effort. Those little devils are expensive! Welcome to the group! Jill In a message dated 10/21/2005 8:20:37 A.M.
