Taking iron has ALWAYS made my stools dark, no matter what brand I have taken in the past. I think a lot of people get this. ???

Iron will sometimes make stools dark; I'm not sure if that's a malabsorption issue or just an incidental by-product. Yes, you need to stop all iron supplements 5 days before iron testing.>> Has anyone had the problem with iron and really foul smelling stools? > They are dark. I am on about 100 mg of iron. YOU HAVE TO STOP IRON FOR FIVE DAYS; UGH! WILL THE READINGS BE WAY OFF IF YOU DON'T STOP THE IRON?

DOES THE COLOR HAVE ANYTHING TO DO WITH IT BEING MALABSORBED? I ALSO HAVE FOUL URINE; IS THIS ALL THE THINGS I AM ON OR DOES THIS HAVE ANYTHING TO DO WITH LOW ALDOSTERONE? I AM NOT URINATING OFTEN. IF I DRINK CAFFEINE OR LEMONAIDE, I WILL HAVE TO GO, BUT IF I JUST DRINK WATER OR SALT WATER, I DON'T GO ALL DAY. R.

Thank you for the links margery

Not positive, but I don't think the dark color is related to malabsorption. I've read it's a harmless side effect of taking iron.

I don't know exactly what you are on, but I can say that lots of B vitamins will sometimes give urine a strange smell and/or an odd color. If it was me, and I was on lots of B vities, I'd skip them for a day to see if that was the cause. Because this could also be from other causes; if it's not B vitamins it must be investigated further.

Here are links to aldosterone info:
