Guest guest
Yes, this could be an RT3 problem. This pattern of Natural Thyroid working at first, then failing, is similar to my own pattern, and it was indeed an RT3 problem for me. The best place to start is to get your FT3/RT3 ratio; yes, you CAN get FT3 and RT3 tested in the UK but need to order the tests privately, here's the link: http://www.thyroiduk.org.uk/tuk/pages/private_tests/privtests.html (thanks to Nick for this info). If it is RT3, for how to treat, Nick's web page has the info: starting/dosing http://thyroid-rt3.com/dosing.htm main page (essential reading): http://thyroid-rt3.com/ > > I have been taking natural thyroid hormones for over a year now. In that time i have switched to synthetic T4 and couldnt get it to work. So since christmas i have been working my way up the grains. i take hc and am on 30mg. My days temps are very stable at around 36.85-36.95 C. My basal temps have come up in that time to 36.4C and i have hit 36.6C on occasions. > > I was doing very well until the end of march on 3 1/2 grains. I became hypo again and thought it may be cortisol or electrolyte related. I upped the hc to 25mg and increased the thyroid to 4 grains. i was well for 2 weeks and then became hypo again. after a bit i upped to 4 1/2 grains and was well for one week. then i upped to 5 grains and again was well for a week. > > I have not been rushing the raises prior to 3 1/2 grains and the raises after that have been every 1 or 2 weeks. > > > So i am getting better and then it is all breaking down. I raised last night by 1/2 grain and felt well until this afternoon. I took the final amount of todays meds (1 1/2 grain) and immediatley i felt hypo. > > Now i experienced a similar thing when on thyroxine. I got to 150mgs and it worked for a good 6 weeks, then it stopped working. when i increased it helped and then stopped working the next day. i remember taking 25mg more on holiday in the evening and i became well again for the night. next day though the hypo symptoms came back. > > Now if all of this is a placebo effect then i am stuffed, but i think it may be something to do with RT3. So my body does well initially on the increase, but then shuts down for some reason - too much T4 in the system maybe? > > I just cannot get tested here in the UK for these things, but will be going to the ukraine soon and hope to get thoroughly tested there. in the meantime what do people reckon to me trying T3 only medication? If so any idea what amount i need to start with? I would drop down to 2 grains and add in 2 x 25mg a day of cytomel. > > I take b12 as this was low last yr. ferritin is fine at 115, and i have just started to take selenium and magnesium again just in case these are an issue. > > 1) Does this sound like RT3 issues? > 2) Should i immediatley back down on the thyroid-s to 4 grains or lower ? > 3) should i introduce some cytomel. if so what dose is normal and should i drop the thyroi -s to 2 grains or lower ? > > My last labs on 3 1/2 grains were FT4 = 17 (10-24) FT3 was well out because i forgot to NOT take the meds before the test so = 11 (2.5-7) >

Yes, I would go T3 only from there, don't worry about the labs (though RT3 is on some of the UK lab lists) just do it! > >My last labs on 3 1/2 grains were FT4 = 17 (10-24) FT3 was well out because i forgot to NOT take the meds before the test so = 11 FT4 over half range normally indicates RT3 being produced.
