Adolescent hypothyroidism

Hi all,

I'm new here. To cut to the chase, I have a genuinely brilliant and

wonderful, paradoxically tall (6'6 " ), continually sick with one flu or

another, apathetic, depressed, unable to focus, couch potato, utterly

sedentary, academically on the verge of flunking out of high school,

much beloved son. I'm hypothyroid myself. I'm taking him in to my doc,

who uses both levothyroid and Armour, in order to get all the

requisite testing. I think he needed this testing years ago, but I

have a stubborn husband who nixed it.

I'm looking for some emotional support here. My husband doesn't want

to see the elephant in the living room (as usual, about anything).

Also, has anyone here had experience with adolescent hypothyroidism,

and if so, what are your stories?

Thanks. Sorry if I'm not being clear--I'm upset and having a hard time

getting this down.

If he is just dealing with hy oand not adrenal issues count your

blessings. But I do recommend an adrenal saliva test to go wiht the

thyroid blood work. I knwo several folks wiht pre-adolescent children

with both problems so you are nto alone.

Hi Sher,

You have an apathetic teenage boy? What a shock LOL! Sorry, couldnt

resist as I have one of my own!

I am sure that Val has already responded that a saliva test for

adrenals is a good idea.

I would like to chime in on support for you with your husband and

testing as I am about to launch my own initiative with mine.

1. This stuff is hereditary, so if there are signs chances are good

that testing will prove you right.

2. Cocaine and other drugs - This is the age (especially junior year

in HS) that these issues become more prevalent and many people with

adrenal issues will " self medicate " with things like coke because it

makes them feel better temporarily.(The adrenaline rush)

The problem is that this stuff will destroy adrenals (as many of us

have learned through experience.) So a little knowledge about ones

thyroid and adrenal health might be a good deterrent. (Hopefully!)

3. If there is a physical reason for any of his difficulties, it is

our job as parents to make sure that it is taken care of. And why

wouldn't we want to offer any help we can? I don't want him to find

out that he has an issue when he is 30, that I could have taken care

of now and saved him alot of suffering. I have enough guilt in my life

thank you very much.

4. Never underestimate a mother's intuition! Sometimes we just know

these things.

Those are my arguments anyway, obviously I wasn't on the debate team!

Good luck,

English

Welcome! I don't have any great words of wisdom, but wanted to say hello.

A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy

enough people to make it worth the effort. Herm Albright
