Guest guest Posted June 3, 2010 Report Share Posted June 3, 2010 I just wanted to share what I learned yesterday from my local health food store owner. Supplementing higher then average doses of vit. D can cause magnesium deficiency. The way I understand it is vit. D uses up magnesium. So if supplementing vit. D it would be a good idea to supplement magnesium as well. Symptoms of mag. deficiency can be : constipation, insomnia, heart palps., anxiety/jitteriness, and muscle cramps. I personally wonder if it can also cause rapid heart rate? I have been supplementing vit d, around 6,000-10,000 iu's. I tested rbc mag. this week and it came up low. I have been having headaches in the am and genrally feeling crappy in the am. So I layed off the vit. d yesterday and today and I am feeling better. I think we are always blaming our thyroid and adrenals for our troubles when actually it could be our treatment that is throwing something else off. I hope this helps someone. Guest guest Posted June 3, 2010 Report Share Posted June 3, 2010 I am not sure I believe it si the vitamin D as I have been takign 10,000IU vitamin D for the last year daily and my magnesium is not low. Guest guest Posted June 5, 2010 Report Share Posted June 5, 2010 I am on low-carb, gluten-free, no-sugar (almsot all the time), no alcohol, no cigs, only salads and meats and water mostly.I don't take calcium supps except the 100 mgs in my 1000 mg Vitamin C (I can't find Ester-C without calcium included!) and calcium in my compounded 2.5 mg HC-capsules from the pharmacy in Belgium! (Impossible to split my 20 mg HC pills down to 2.5 mg!)Last time I checked PTH it was like at the bottom range... I don't know what that means.. The doc didn't say anything! Diet? I have cut down on diary products, so I am not getting much calcium from that. I do eat vegetables and meanst, which has calcium in them. What about my Vitamin C's with calcium in them? The low resolution of the phone makes these things difficult to hear. Anyway. So it's not that high. Does this mean I can safely try 5000 iu a day again? Even with a low range PTH in serum?The doc wrote a comment:"Your Ferritin is marginally below the low reference limit, Magnesium is marginally above it. You mentioned that you took Iron supplements, right? Men shouldn't take iron supplements, because we don't loose iron like women do (menstruation) - If your iron values keeps lying low, you should consider getting checked for bleeding in the stomach/intestine, and absorption defects in the stomach/small intestine. Maybe you have Coeliac? These are just a few thoughts. We here at the private clinic could give you our opinion about your whole health situation if you wish for us to do so. If so, you must send us all your paperwork, labs etc."Oh, and what if things turn, in terms of absorption, when I start Pancreatic Enzyme and BEATING HCL? Maybe I'll absorb things so well that I'll be even MORE overdoses on HC and such? COULD things "turn" like this when I start these two supplements, Val?Thanks!
