I did a search on hyperparathyroidism in the archives, and your post

came up. I was wondering what treatment you had for this? I am well

over range in calcium in a 24 hour urine sample (nearly double the top

range) and a hair analysis 2 years ago showed calcium off the charts.

I have BIG blood sugar problems, which I think are linked. I take a

lot of magnesium, as I read this antagonises calcium, plus taurine to

help magnesium retention. My GP is looking into the elevated calcium,

and I am about to have a bone density scan. I have been taking

Prednisolone and Florinef for a year - my adrenals are shot.

Is the hyperparathyroidism all down to the endocrine havoc mercury

causes? Beyond chelation, (and this will take a long time with me - I

am one of Andy's very seriously poisoned people) is there any

treatment. Will I have any bones left after this?!

I don't take calcium at present, because I find this exacerbates my

blood sugar problems, though I do drink water with calcium, and eat

green vegetables.

Any insight gratefully received.

Surgery.

What doses do you take?

Yes. My brain isn't working well enough to explain it right now.

Give me a couple of days to think and remind me.

It has to do with low levels of vitamin D causing the parathyroid to

work harder and harder until an area of hyperactive cells develope

into an adenoma that hyperexcrete parathyroid hormone.

I had a single adenoma and it was removed by surgery.

First of all, you don't really know that you have a hyperparathyroid.

You need to ask your GP to test serum Ca and if that is consistently

high ask him to test parathyroid hormone. If parathyroid hormone is

high then the diagnosis is hyperparathyroidism and the only treatment

is surgery.

One year after surgery my bone density was 2 standard deviations (if I

recall correctly) better than normal for my age and weight. I have

been taking lots of vitamin D.

Ask for a 25 (OH) vitamin D blood test (25 hydroxy-vitamin D), just to

show yourself how low the level is. Most people are very, very low

because we don't get adequate sunshine and not much from food. The

optimal level would be 100-150 nmol/L. Then you can supplement

vitamin D accordingly.

Almonds have lots of Ca. Also canned salmon.

Thanks for this . My serum calcium is normal, just the urine

calcium is very elevated, so I guess that's not a diagnosis of

hyperparathyroidism. Having done some reading around I guess it

would be good to take Vitamin D and K.

I take 6.5mg of Pred (5mg in the morning, 1.5mg at night) and 200mcg

of Florinef, recently up from 100mcg. I found this helped with blood

sugar fluctuations, though it hasn't eradicated them completely. I

am chelating at 8mg DMSA, though not very regularly, as it always

seems to stress my adrenals. I am 11 months post-amalgam removal,

and still feel very poorly. I have definite mercury off-loading

periods, when the hangover feeling gets worse, I have bloating,

pounding heart, stressed adrenals and a very noticeable metallic

taste in my mouth. This lasts maybe up to a week, and then I have

one or two days with a clear head, and then the next one comes. It

is always disappointing. How long will this dumping go on for?

thanks for your help
