First lab draw since he had surgery 2 years ago and he had a MAJOR meltdown when we attempted to have labs drawn today...My endocrinologist is insistant that we use a LABCORP facility. Does anyone know of any mobile phlebotomy services? Thanks in advance...

who worked for Dr. Berger is one of the best for our kids. I don't know his number but if you call Dr. Berger's office (Wholistic Pediatrics) in Tampa, they should be able to give you that information.

You should also be able to give our child some GABA that should help with the anxiety. Check with your doctor.

I would suggest visiting your pharmacy and see if you can have all the necessary components...syringe, alcohol wipe,

bandage, something to band around arm for looking for a vein. I remember well those days of my son rolling around on the

floor...For many days prior to an appointment, his wonderful behavior therapist would practice and pretend to be the lab. Go through all the steps minus the blood draw.

Many years later (including this last week)..my son is able to do his labs with no issues. It just takes practice and a very good

reinforcer...for when its done successfully.

We use Labcorp in weston.

(Definitely make an appointment so you dont have to wait endless amounts of time)

Good Luck!!!! Hope this helps.

I believe that LabCorp still has their mobile testing units. If you call or

e-mail they can advise you. The contact info is:

patientfeedback@...

Reading the social story and letting your child see the video on these 2 sites

may help your child to feel more calm about the test.

http://www.oneplaceforspecialneeds.com/main/library_blood_test.html

http://kidshealth.org/kid/closet/movies/video_bldtest.html

Acknowledge the fear your child feels. Let him know you understand that he is

afraid, but promise him that you will stay by their side and not let anything

bad happen to them. Tell your child there will be a little pain at first but it

will be over quickly.

Other things that may help, are:

Ask if you can wrap your child in a blanket and have him sit on your lap with

one arm extended for the test.

Sing a song during the blood draw. Itsy Bitsy Spider works well for us as we

usually finish about the time the blood draw is done.

Allow your child to read or clutch a stuffed toy while the blood is drawn.

If your child has a special superhero like Batman, Green Lantern, etc. Let them

hold it during the test. Tell your child that their superhero will give them

the power to get through the test without too much trouble.

Ask that the very smallest butterfly needle be used.

Take a small bottle of orange juice for after the draw. Your child may feel a

little dizzy or weak and the dizziness may enhance the fear for them.

I always promise my son a treat afterward. A donut, milkshake, or a small toy

like a Hot Wheels car.

My boys have their blood drawn by an independent phlebotomist, who comes to the dentist office (for their annual cleanings/ x-rays, etc). They're are put under general anesthesia, by an traveling anesthesiologist, who comes to the dentist office. It's the only way the dental work and blood draw can be successful.
