well those folks who pocket a lot of cash on the insulin and other things

you need as a T one, would certainly beg you to stop wondering about it. I

know for sure it works for a T 2 like me. once my sugar got up to 165

because of eating things I shouldn't have been eating. so I ate very little

rest of the day and exercise for 20 minutes out of each hour for the next

six hours. drank water as well, but took no insulin. that night at dinner my

sugar test showed my reading was 78. didn't take my insulin at dinner and it

was only 98 at bed time. certainly know this works for us who are a T 2 and

very good chance with smaller amounts of insulin? it could work as well for

a T one, but the so called experts would love to point out to you how bad

trying it would be for your health! they probably won't say anything about

the huge piles of cash they would have to give up if you proved it really

did work as you think. really no need to upset there apple cart no way. I

mean, who would they get rich off of then if all the T one's stop using so

much insulin? most will keep on eating what they desire and living on the

edge, just as the so called experts know they will. what do you actually

believe the percentage is of those who use there meters daily and control

there diabetes with diet and exercise? just in the folks I know who are

diabetic, T one or 2, maybe 3% keep good control on it and this may be

giving some a lot of credit for a thing they aren't doing. most diabetics I

know continue doing the same things as always, but wishing for different

results!

Historically, I mean, way back when, diabetics (this is before type 2 was a

recognized disease), the only way the medical community knew to deal with

diabetes was to starve the patient. And this ultimately proved to be

ineffective since most diagnosed diabetics died. So, I guess I answered my

own question. Still, I have to think now and then, a type 1 can safely come

off insulin given the right conditions.

Dave,

A type 1 cannot, under any circumstances, stop taking insulin. Even if the

type 1 stops eating, the body is going to try and get glucose by converting

fat and eventually muscle to glucose. Without insulin, your blood sugar

would still rise and you would go into DKA and die.

Well, I checked at 3 PM, about the time I normally do a mid-afternoon check,

and I was 105, representing a drop from 2 PM. So, I ate my normal

mid-afternoon snack. At dinner, around 6 PM, I was 167. So, it appears, not

taking my lunchtime insulin had a delayed negative effect after all.

,

There really are no symptoms of kidney failure until you are in stage 4.

then you have swelling in the legs, lots of fatigue, difficulty in breathing

(due to water in the lungs)and just a feeling of crappiness! That is why it

is important that your doc is periodically doing blood work to check your

kidneys so you don’t get to that state.

I think you are right. How do we check for that. Is there a way to know if

DKA means diabetic ketones-acidosis. Not a good thing to go into! It means

your body is burning up fat and/or muscle for energy instead of glucose.

This puts ketones into your body; these are a chemical that destroys body

tissue, including brain tissues and can kill you.

Another test that one should have done is a urine test to check the kidneys.

This should be done once a year and I have heard that the start of kidney

issues are found earlier in a urine test.

Yes, it's generally called something like, a full metabolic blood panel, or

CBC, usually 3 times per year. This blood work will show the kidney

function, along with several other vital things to monitor. If your kidneys

are beginning to show some dysfunction, this blood work will indicate it.

You won't be able to " feel " your kidneys beginning to fail.

Yes, typically, your doctor will check urine along with drawing blood for blood

labs. It's not a bad idea to see a nephrologist once a year who will probably

want a 24-hour urine sample.

I missed the original e-mail concerning this question. But my husband Joe is

going thru this right now. July 5th he got in his left arm a fistula and will

take 3 months to heal before dialysis can be used in it, if he has to start

before 3 months they will put a cathedar in upper chest. This is not a fun time

we are going thru so please anyone out there be careful and try to do the best

you can do by doing what your doctor says if you like him and trust him. Not

all doctors have good bedside manner but some do know what they are talking

about. Thanks for listening and if anyone has any suggestions send them in.

Thanks, and Joe

I went through what your husband is going throughg about 2 years ago.

It is a miserable time, but once he goes on dialysis, he will feel better.

It takes some getting used to, but hang in there.
