Guest guest
Hi, Dotty, I use the Solo V2, and while I'm not 100% satisfied with it, it serves its purpose. What don't you like about the Solo meter? If you find out anything else about these other talking meters, please pass the info along. Remember, there are apparently a lot of companies out there claiming to have a " talking " meter, which in the end, prove to be unhelpful to those of us who are blind or significantly visually impaired. To make a long story short, I have a Solo V2 and the older model of the Prodigy Voice and need to buy strips or something to wait out the time till the new talking meter is ready from Hungary. So I did my research again, checked out all the meters that claim to talk. There are two which intrigue me, the Arc Ray Expression and one I heard on Youtube, called the " Real " Talking Glucose Meter sold by Senior Med LLC. I don't know what meter this is, it says: " Please relax during measurement. " It supposedly has one button on the front. Does anyone know what it is? By the way, Senior Med LLc's phone number has now gone to another company. I plan to buy strips for my Solo V2, though I am not really happy with this choice. Guest guest
I just started using my Solo V2 meter yesterday. I only test twice a day and am always at home so can put the data into a spreadsheet soon after taking my reading so don’t need to know what time I tested. I like how it tells you when it has enough blood to test. Guest guest
Hello, Dave, First I don't like the Solo V2's voice. Now this is just a preference issue, it's not a bad voice, I just don't happen to like it. Then, I am ticked that it is billed as a fully audible meter developed with input from blind people and we can't hear the date and time of the readings in the memory. Then there is the software, which I have never gotten to install properly. Now there are good things about it: Its test strip, the 5-minute delay before turning off, the warning of insufficient blood, and its hard case that doesn't allow the meter to be triggered accidentally, thus running down the battery. But my Sensolite Nova Plus has recordings of human phonemes, the girl is British. It also has an insufficient blood warning, she shouts " " False reading! not enough blood on the strip! " The memory and setup are fully audible. It is plasma-calibrated. Its disadvantages are that the volume cannot be changed by the user; she shouts. There is no jack for an earphone. The meter can be triggered in the case, though hardly as easily as the Prodigy Voice, because the case lid has a stiff cardboard insert. As I said in my previous message, it needed to be coded, which sounds more problematic than it really is. A code card looking like a miniature tongue depressor comes in the box with each vial of test strips and this must be swiped in and out of the code strip port; never been a problem. The meter I heard on the Youtube: calls it the " Real " Talking Glucose Meter. It supposedly has one button on the face--who knows where the memory is? The company seems to have turned into American Medical Supplies, now selling the Glucocard Expression, a Taiwan-made meter without audible memory readout. The sound of this meter is great, clear and verbose. I don't know if I would like to buy it but I certainly would like to know what it is so I could read about it. And while I'm ranting, why do we have to choose between " good " meters and talking meters? Wouldn't we like to be able to add a bit more blood to the strip, too? Wouldn't we like to be able to choose the meters that are given good ratings for accuracy by test labs and our doctors? Oh, Dotty, now that's enough. But if anyone knows anything about this " Real " Talking Glucose Meter, do please let me know. Dotty
Guest guest
Hello, Sal, Can you set the date and time with the voice? Can you review previous readings from the memory? Do you know of a URL where I can hear this Clever Chek meter? Thanks. Dotty
Guest guest
You've hit on my biggest peeve with the Solo--the lack of audible feed-back for previous readings. I'm simply amazed how the designers failed to incorporate such a basic and necessary feature. I protested this way back when Chris somebody or other first brought this meter to my attention. He in fact asked me to test the meter, which I did, and pointed out this shortcoming, along with a few other items. But, as things so often go, they never made the changes. My feeling is, they'd already made umpteen million of these meters, stashed them in a warehouse somewhere, and are distributing these out to the suppliers. In a few years, when they're all gone, then the Solo V2 will be discontinued or something. Guest guest
Hello, Dave and everyone, The meter on Youtube labeled the " Real " Talking Glucose Meter turns out to be the FORA V10. There is some question as to whether the memory functions speak, I'm checking into this, but the rest of the meter is accessible. Guest guest
Dan, who chimes in here now and then, has mentioned this meter. I believe there are several iterations of the meter. I'm not sure it's available in the US. But you're not in the US, Dotty, right? Guest guest
Hello, Dave and everyone, I have given some thought to the issue of my meter and have decided that plasma reference calibration is the most important feature for me to look for. This is mainly because my Sensolite Nova Plus is calibrated to plasma and its successor will also be, when it is manufactured. So, I would do better if this interim meter that I choose is also plasma-referenced. Well, that knocks out both the Prodigy Voice and my Solo V2. This leaves the FORA meters, the Clever Choice Voice and the Embrace. Embrace has no spoken memory function, so that's probably out, though I would take it over a whole-blood-referenced meter if it came to that. Can anyone speak to the FORA meters or the Clever Choice Voice? Do you know where I can hear the voice of the Clever Choice? Do either of them have good test strips? Thanks. Guest guest
I understand there is a difference between plasma and whole blood, but I'm not convinced it is necessary for us, performing at home monitoring, to worry about the differences. Capillary blood is supposed to provide a more accurate reading, but my thought is, the most important thing to consider is how using either meter gives us a pretty close idea of our blood sugar, even if not exactly right. In other words, if my whole blood meter gives me a reading of 100, and a plasma meter gives me a reading of what, 105, the difference is unremarkable. Now, if the differences were greater, let's say, 100 versus 130, well, that's something else. But, I don't think we're talking that much difference. Dotty, do you have some info on the differences between the meters? Do these other companies offer statistics stating whole blood meters are harmful, and then show how far apart the readings between meters is, for instance? Thanks.
