Guest guest
The school could use their Medicaid money to buy one. There are also grants they can apply for.Sent from my iPad Anyone know where I can get an inexpensive ipad that works? My son's school would like him to have one. Thanks, =

Guest guest
Hi , With the launch of the iPad3, Apple.com is now selling new iPad2 for $399. If you want to spend even less, I have seen a used iPad on http://craigslist.com/ for around $190 (be careful when selecting the seller). When you get the iPad you can connect it to your wireless at home so you don't have to pay monthly data fees. For kids that are using the iPad as a communication device, the app Proloquo2Go is typically recommended, but it costs anywhere from $190-$250 depending on the features your want. There is however a good FREE app called Sounding Board: http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/soundingboard/id390532167?mt=8 You can download the app and use the limited pictures they provide or you can take your own pictures of people, objects and so forth using the iPad camera. Then you create custom boards for various things. You can add the 3 photos a custom board (you define the number of pictures). For each photo on the board, you can record your voice for each item, for example, "banana", "apple" or "peach" it's pretty cool and it's free. Best of luck to you. Guest guest
If the school is recommending one, they must purchase it for him. Have them contact the Assistive Technology Specialist assigned to the school or district. I have MANY students using ipads that were not purchased by their parents. Guest guest
There are many legitimate organizations that fund iPads. I work for smartappsforkids.com which gives away iPads every month. Others like iHelpSpecial Needs Kids have chip ins to held raise funds for needy families and schools. Anybody with specific questions can contact me. I have about 800 apps now. Guest guest
Thank you for the info Stacey. How long does it typically take for the school board to provide the iPad? Are there restrictions related to it's usage? For example, may the student take the iPad home? Can the iPad be used by private therapists too? Can the family take the iPad when the travel away from home or during the summer? I'm just trying to figure out if it is worth waiting for the school or not. Guest guest
The school district treats the IPad just like any other AAC device, which means that your child can use it everywhere he or she needs it. Just keep in mind that the schools are still relatively new to the use of the IPad and its applications for communication and also for learning. We worked closely with the teacher and the therapists, and have had a good experience- for our child, the IPad was a good fit and the way he communicates now is far more functional than other AAC alternatives that the district had available. Just be aware that this is not the case with every child. That's why the Assistive Technology Specialist must be involved in the process. Make sure the school requests the Assistive Technology evaluation as soon as classes start. > > Thank you for the info Stacey. >  > How long does it typically take for the school board to provide the iPad?
