Guest guest
Hi, We enrolled our daughter in a priate pre school by our house 3 weeks ago. Just last week, Kate was diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Her doctor told us she doesn't need a specialized school, we just need to continue with her therapy and make sure her teachers are aware of her diagnosis. Kate loves going to school, but she gets a little upset around nap time. She doesn't want to sleep there ( napped 2 out of 8 days), she had never been to daycare nor slept on a floor mat before. The teacher told us it was normal, sometimes it takes longer for them to adjust plus she had been at home for two years without interacting much with others. They all seemed to be on board and wanting to help her transition to her full day at school. As per the doctor's recommendation I made the school aware of Kate's diagnosis. Less than 48 hours after the school's director called me. We met in person and she said she couldn't offer Kate a full day program because she just didn't have enough teachers to do that. She said our daughter needs a person just for herself after lunch time. We are very upset about all this, why is it that before her diagnosis they wanted to help and now not so much anymore?. We feel Kate wasn't really given the opportunity to really transition. I have friends who told me their kids took between 3 weeks to two months before naping in school. We've decided to move on and find a school that is the right fit for our daughter. I've been school hunting all week and haven't had much luck so far. Can anyone recommend any good pre schools in Miami or Kendall area. We are hoping to find a school close to home but even if we have to drive to Broward area we are willing to do so. We would really appreciate any help. Thank you!
Guest guest
Hello, if I may ask who diagnosed your daughter with Autism? When my son was 18 months when he was diagnosed. I took him to Fiddlers in Fort Lauderdale. When he was diagnosed he attended a pre-school and someone appointed by Fiddlers visited him in daycare. She helped him transition. He only attended half day because I was a stay home mom. He also received therapy at home at no charge. When he turned three he went into the school system. Public schools have pre-k programs. Guest guest
Also just FYI when you daughter turns three years old she qualifies for the place or complex place program for autistic children. The program is a full day program available for your daughter at no cost to you. Check out your elementary home school and will let you know if they have the program if not they will let you know what school in you area has the program for your daughter. The program can even help with potty training along with other skills that help her be independent. Best of luck to you and your daughter. Guest guest
Of course, she was seen at the Dan Marino center by a Nurse Practitioner and Dr. Tuchman. I met someone in school who told me about Fiddlers but for some reason my Early Steps coordinator said Fiddlers was from 3 years old up. That is so nice; I think having someone to help her during this transition will really make it easier for her. > > Hello, if I may ask who diagnosed your daughter with Autism? Guest guest
I am a nursery teacher myself, and yes foe a topical child it might take up to three weeks to adapt to her/his surroundings including routines. Sometimes is difficult if the staff is not trained to deals with some of the issues a child with autism have. I had the privilege of having autistic kids in my class, they all different cases. Love and patience is all they need to learn to socialize.Sent from my HTC smartphone on the Now Network from Sprint!----- Reply message -----To: <sList >Subject: Pre school for my 2 year old in Miami/ Kendall areaDate: Tue, Aug 7, 2012 6:04 pm Hello, if I may ask who diagnosed your daughter with Autism? Guest guest
You should contact CHILD FIND at FLDRS (Florida Diagnostic and Leaning Resources System) in your area, and ask them what kind of services your child can get. Maybe they should do the screening/evaluation. Call them now at , and go to their web page so you can learn about their programs. Good luck.
