Ascorbate too acidic?

My dentist has suggested I take 'acai fruit' (origin Brazil), said to

have super antioxidant properties, instead of the ascorbate form of

Vit C, because the latter may be too acidic for my digestive system (I

am a Crohn's patient of a number of years with 2 surgeries involving

removal of parts of the small intestine, including the terminal ileum).

Does her advice seem valid? Is the purpose of taking large doses of

Vit C in ascorbate form to have antioxidant processes working in the

body or is there something else behind its purpose that I have missed?

I went ahead and ordered the freeze dried powder form of the acai

fruit a few days ago, which I need to take a spoonful of in a shake,

yogurt, juice etc. each day. Now I am wondering if I still need to

add the ascorbate form of Vit C in addition to the acai, or just take

the ascorbate by itself, or just tha acai shall be helpful enough?

He apparently doesn't actually know anything about chemistry.

" ascorbate " is the name for the NONacidic form of vitamin C.

The acidic form is called " ascorbic acid. "

Without excessive acid loading, yes. Ascorbate is used because it is not acid.

Just take the ascorbate, whcih has a zillion times more ascorbate in it than the

acai.

Hmm, now I get it. I think what happened was a 'lost in translation'.

The dentist is German and does speak English fairly well (but

apologises all the time about her lack of it). We had our conversation

over the phone, so I think she heard 'ascorbate' as 'ascorbic' and

cautioned against its use!
